If you ever stopped by the gas station in town, chances are you were greeted by the unofficial mayor of the front porch, Uncle Wayne, proudly serving as the self-appointed “Gas Station Porch Rocking Chair Operator”. From that rocking chair, conveniently located at his lifelong best friend Timmy’s gas station, he told more tall tales than a fisherman at a family reunion and cracked enough jokes to keep the whole town smiling. Whether or not his stories were true? Well, that was part of the fun (and honestly, we’re still not sure).
Wayne had a gift for laughter, a heart for family, and hands that crafted beauty out of wood especially around Christmas, when his handmade nativity scenes and decorations became treasured heirlooms. He babysat for family and friends, sang praise songs to God well past bedtime, and never met a NASCAR race he didn’t have an opinion about.
He shared a special bond with his siblings, as well as his cousin, lovingly referred to as his “evil twin”, even across state lines. Family and friends were everything to him and he made sure they knew it.
And through it all, even on the hardest days, he never once complained. He knew God had everything in HIS hands. No matter how he felt, he chose joy, humor, and kindness. His life was a blend of faith, laughter, and mischief. If you were ever lucky enough to meet him, you probably left with a smile (and maybe a story you’re still trying to fact-check).
