Joan (Jo) Gwinn Daniels Sweeney, 90, of Beckley passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2015. Joan was born on January 1, 1925 to the late Winfred and Violet Brooks Daniels in Hinton. She completed her undergraduate work in Education at Concord and her Master’s Degree at WVU. Joan began her teaching career at Lillybrook School and taught at several one-room schools in Raleigh County. She continued her teaching career at Brooks Adair and Lester Elementary. She spent the last twenty years of her teaching career at Beckley Junior High, where she taught English and Science. In her spare time, Joan enjoyed crocheting and reading, especially her Bible. She was a faithful member of First Christian Church of Beckley for approximately 60 years. She was an active member of the community and was a proud member of the James Allen Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in which she held several state and local offices, including Regent and Historian. Joan was also a dedicated member of the University Women’s Association, the Raleigh County Educator’s Association and Retired Teachers Association, holding several offices in both. Joan also loved to travel, both here and abroad, visiting many countries during her travels around the world. She was a kind and gentle woman, and will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved her. In addition to her parents, Joan is preceded in death by her husband, G. Lloyd Sweeney, one brother, Nathan Daniels, and one sister, Maude Moye. Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Michael Lloyd Sweeney and wife, Billie K.; grandsons, Jeremy M. Sweeney, and W. Dale Woolum and wife, Kaska; sister, Hope Underwood; nephews, Danny Moye and significant other, Marian Covey, Nathan Daniels, and Denny Daniels; nieces, Colleen Redden and husband, Jerry, and Vicky Hensley and husband, Ed; great-nephew, Daniel Moye and fiancé, Laura Richmond; aunt, Gail Kair and husband, Norman; cousins, Yvonne Statzer, Sonny Canaday and wife, Marie, and Jimmy Canaday; sisters-in-law, Ada Daniels, and Thelma Lilly and husband, Kelso; and special friends, Regina and Jay Mitchell, and Rick and Samantha McCool. Services for Joan will be held at Blue Ridge Funeral Home on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 3pm with Rev. Don Snyder officiating. Family will receive guests prior to the service on Saturday from 2pm – 3pm. Entombment in the Mausoleum of Peace in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens will immediately follow the services with Daniel Moye, Nathan Daniels, John Bridi, and Wayne Tucker serving at pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Christian Church of Beckley, or your favorite charity.
