Dec. 12, 1922, she was the daughter of John Henry and Mabel Mae McKinney Fix and
a loving sister to four siblings. Known for her keen memory, she served unofficially
as oral historian of generations of the McKinney, Fix and Bolen families, collecting
and preserving pictures, stories and documents. She enjoyed life to the fullest and
often stated that she would relish living her life over, exactly as it occurred. Our
view is that there’s no greater testament of a life well lived than to want to re-live it.
Her unwavering faith in Christianity and steadfast devotion to husband and family
were constants in a life filled with love, compassion, and sense of purpose.
Mabel Lee is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Ruby and Carline, brother
John Russell, grandson Russell, and her loving husband Asa. She is survived by her
sister Eula Faye Fix Sanders and husband Bob (Austin TX), children, Erma Helvey &
husband Grant (Berlin, MD), Wayne & wife Cassandra (Phoenix, AZ), Arnold & wife
Cathy (Beckley, WV), Paul & wife Geri (Red Bank, NJ), and Gary (Beckley, WV).
Other survivors include 12 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.
Our family is forever grateful to Ms. Judy Weaver for the outstanding care she
provided Mabel Lee during her time of need. The mutual strong friendship and trust
they developed was a major factor in extending the high quality of life Mabel Lee
enjoyed during her last years.
It is so difficult for those remaining to part with someone of such indomitable spirit.
She leaves us with endearing memories, as a mother, sister, grandmother, great
grandmother, in-law, and friend. We are bound by ties with her that death cannot
sever.
