John served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was also a member of the UMWA and worked construction for Toner Concrete, B & B Excavating, Piney Creek Coal Company, Carolina Wren Coal Company and built many roads and ponds in Raleigh and surrounding counties.
John loved to fish, camp, hunt, ginseng, garden and most of all, take care of his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Luther Mance Moore and Grace McClung; sisters Margaret Meadows Hancock, Mary Gaynell Lilly, and Sue Lilly; brother Warren Moore; and daughter-in-law Cecile Donaldson Moore.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 63 years, Linda Mae Ellison; sons Tommy and Melvin (Tracy) Moore all of Cool Ridge; daughters Lisa (David) Taylor of Cool Ridge, Deborah (Robert) Duncan of White Oak and Johna Moore of Florida; grandchildren Janelle Brogan, Amanda Plumley, David Taylor Jr. and Morgan Ranson, Megan Moore, Melinda Moore, Amber Moore, Robbie Duncan Jr., John (Samantha) Duncan and Jaylen Duncan all of Raleigh County. John is also survived by sisters Patsy Lawson of Ohio, Phyllis Smith of Shady Spring, brother Roger Moore of Shady Spring and 13 great-grandchildren McKenzie, Briar, and River Brogan, Dwight Moore, Abigail, Katie and Gracelyn Plumley, Piper and Reagan Oiler, Parker Taylor, Isaac Smith, Tyler Sauls and Summer Smith.
Funeral service will be held 1:00 pm, Thursday, January 23, 2020 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home. The family will receive friends for visitation from 11 am - 1 pm. John will be laid to rest at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens following services by his family and friends serving as pallbearers. Online condolences may be offered at www.blueridgefuneralhome.com.
