Mildred Whitten Paynter Cook
On Tuesday, January 13, 2015 Mildred Whitten Paynter Cook passed away peacefully into her eternal life while at the Bowers Hospice House of Beckley, WV. She was in her 82nd year.
Mildred was a former resident of Cyclone, WV where she was a member of the Lacoma Baptist Church. For the past 17 years she has been a resident of Beckley, WV where she was a member of the Calloway Heights Baptist Church; a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class and enjoyed singing in the church choir.
Born on August 04, 1932 in Wayne County, WV she was the daughter of the late Frank and Rachel Webb Whitten. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband R. Jack Paynter in 1997 and Dick Cook in 2014; a son-in-law Rodney K. Lusk, a grandson Kevin Lusk and one brother Jim Whitten.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Michael Paynter and his wife Patty of Prosperity, SC and her daughter Sandra Lusk of Jesse, WV; three brothers, Ralph Whitten of Fanrock, WV, Lindsey Whitten and wife Pat of Beckley and Jack Whitten and wife Mamie of Rockview, WV; three sisters, Sadie Toley and husband Gene of Roanoke, VA, Jewel Lusk and husband Raymond of Parkersburg, WV and Barbara Stone and husband Mike of Stafford, VA; three grandsons, Chris Paynter and wife Dana of Orlando, FL, Matthew Brown and wife, Andrea of Kopperston and Adam Lusk of Laurel, MD; six great-grandchildren, Kendal, Kami and Casey Paynter of Orlando, FL, Madalyn and Rylee Brown of Kopperston and Seth Lusk of Davin, WV; one sister-in-law Dorotha Paynter of Mount Carbon, WV; sixteen nephews and six niece’s and a host of friends.
Mildred attended Oceana High School. She worked as a seamstress at Browning Dust Collectors at Davin, WV. Through the years she enjoyed a weekly game of “ROOK” with good friends, family vacations, reunions, going to yard sales, sewing and quilting, collecting antiques and even played on a woman’s softball team. She loved being around people and rarely met a stranger.
A celebration of Mildred’s life will be on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 1:00 PM at the Blue Ridge Funeral Home in Beckley.
Friends may gather with the family from 11:00 AM until time of service at the funeral home. Rev. Jeff Canterbury, Chaplain David Jones and Rev. Bill Parker will be officiating. Following the service Mildred will be laid to rest beside her first husband Jack at Palm Memorial Gardens at Matheny, WV. Friends of the family will serve as pallbearers.
The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to the staff of Harper Mills, Raleigh General Hospital and Bowers Hospice House of Beckley, Select Specialty Hospital of Saint Francis Hospital in Charleston, WV and Calloway Heights Baptist Church for their care, kindness, prayers and visits during the past year.
Mildred will be greatly missed and remembered by those who knew and loved her for a life well lived. ……..until we’re together again.
