Mrs. Ocie Irene Adkins

Ocie Irene Adkins, age 90, passed away Thursday, October 16, 2014 at Harper Mills Nursing Home, “Heartland”. Born August 16, 1924 at Pluto, Mrs. Adkins was the daughter of the late John R. and Izora Plumley Bennett. She is the last surviving member of the Bennett Family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert F. Adkins in April 1994, and had resided at Cool Ridge for the last 50 years. She was preceded in death by brothers, Jessie, Arlo, Davie and Okley Bennett; sisters, Bessie Whittaker, Nona Furrow and Eva Miller. And also 2 infant brothers and several nieces and nephews preceded her in death.

Mrs. Adkins is survived by several nieces and nephews and special cousin, Naomi Eye.

The family would like to extend a Special Thank You to Josephine and Clayton Bolen, Sharon Harmon and all her Laurel Street neighbors for watching out for her while she was living at home. Also thanks to Harper Mills Nursing Home for the care and love she received while being a 2 year resident and Hospice of Southern West Virginia.

Mrs. Adkins attended the Ghent Freewill Baptist Church in Ghent.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, October 19, 2014 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Beckley with Pastor Jeff Shrewsbury officiating. George Whittaker, II, great-nephew will be singing at the service.

Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may gather with the family Sunday from 12:30 – 2:00 at the funeral home.
