

Roger Lee Moore, 76, of Cool Ridge WV, passed away Sunday May 29th 2023 at Summer’s Healthcare Center following a short illness. Roger was born June 20, 1946 in Mullens WV to the late Monroe and Grace (McClung) Moore. In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his siblings Margaret Hancock, Mance “John” Moore, Warren Moore, Patsy Lawson, Wanda “Sue” Lilly, Gaynell Lilly, and his sister and best friend Phyllis Smith. Roger was also preceded in death by his only son, Roger Lee Moore II.
Roger was drafted in the Army at 19 and sent to Vietnam as a part of the 584th engineers' group. Upon entering the jungle, he joined and served with the 4th infantry division, 20th Combat Battalion. He spent 13 months in Vietnam serving in many areas including Dragon Mountain, Pleasure Rain, Pleiku, and into Cambodia. Roger’s bravery, tenacity, and resolute and unswerving valor earned him 2 bronze stars and the Vietnam Service Medal, among many other medals. He was also a POW. Roger sacrificed his youth, his time, and his strength to do a job many were not willing to do. While he did not pay the ultimate sacrifice, he suffered most of his life for the things he endured for our freedom and is a true American hero. Following Roger’s return from Vietnam, he moved to Ohio and worked for General Motors at the Lordstown GM Plant, Assembly Division as a body repair man. He retired after 39 ½ years with GM. Roger was full of adventure and exuberance and believed in working hard and playing harder. He loved to attend car shows where he often won best in show for his 1930 Model A Ford that he built from the ground up. He had his pilot’s license, he loved riding motorcycles, camping, and traveling. Roger was full of life and was always up for an adventure. He will be dearly missed by those closest to him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter Lori Rabish of Ohio, daughter in law Christine Moore, grandchildren Ricky Rabish, Roger Moore III, Baily Moore, Emma Moore, and Chase Moore all of Ohio, Ava and Addison Miles of Florida, a host of nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by his loving caretakers; Misty Smith, Tammy Farley, Izaac Smith. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Sandy, Jim, and Jared Harper for their unwavering support, thoughtfulness, and compassion.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023 at 1 PM with Pastor Clarence Hudson officiating at Blue Ridge Funeral Home. The family will begin receiving visitors at 11 AM until the time of the service.
Pallbearers will be; Jesse “Skeeter” Smith, Izaac Smith, Daren Lilly, Danny Lawson, Rocky Hudson, Chris McKinney, and alternate Darrell Lawson.
