On Thursday evening, April 17, 2025, our precious matriarch, mother and grandmother, quietly passed away at her home surrounded by her devoted family. (2 Timothy 4:7-8) “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day”.
Violet P. (Adams) Baldwin, 96, of Ghent, WV was born on January 6, 1929. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, William S. Baldwin; her parents, Harrison and Anna Adams; brother, Harold Adams; sisters, Ruth Adams Burns and Ruby Adams Simms,
Those left to carry on her extraordinary legacy and keep her memory alive are her four children and their spouses; her son, William H. Baldwin (Carolyn Sue), of Ghent; her three daughters, Jackie Worley (William “Bill”), of Cool Ridge, Sharon Crook (Joseph), of Hurricane, and Gayle Mills (Rodney), of Ballard. Nan, as she was affectionately known, will be missed by her seven grandchildren; Harold Baldwin (Kimberly); William Ray Worley, III, (Jennifer), Angela Simmons, (Greg); Lori Chavis, (Timothy “Coop”); Joseph Matthew Crook, IV (Amy), Samuel Bin Mills (Brooke); Isaac Mills (Melissa). Nan had 12 great grandchildren; Chelsey, Haley, Raegan, Finley, Cooper, Ariel, Jacob, Luke, Amelia, Leah, Zane and Violet; and three great-great grandchildren, Ryder, Pierce, and Charlotte Kate. She is also survived by one sister, Marie Adams Crowder, of Lynchburg, Virginia as well as several nieces and nephews.
Violet was steadfast in her walk with her Lord and was a faithful member of Camp Creek Community Church where she was loved and admired by everyone. Her faith in the Lord remained unwavering as she faced her decline knowing she had the prayers and support of her church, its pastor, and his wife who actively demonstrated spiritual guidance, care, love and appreciation for her, as she did for them.
Violet worked for many years in the retail industry in Beckley including early years at G.C. Murphy Company; Rahall’s Ladies Shop, and finally the bridal industry, Joseph’s Glad Ele Bridal Shop and the Emporium, assisting so many beautiful brides with choosing and fitting their wedding dresses for the most important day of their lives. She found such joy in making sure the bride found just the right dress and accessories so their special day would be perfection. She also enjoyed quilting, gifting handmade quilts to each grandchild as they came along until she could no longer manage the task. She also enjoyed crafting and flower arranging until her hands no longer cooperated. She loved her card ministry and sent hundreds of celebratory cards or cards of encouragement over the years.
Violet’s greatest blessing in life was the love of her family. The unconditional love and shared experiences of her family was her source of strength and comfort. She taught her children and grandchildren that the love of a family means you will love and be loved the rest of your life. Violet, full of grace and more wisdom than we could ever learn, had an enormous impact on the lives of all those she met, always providing encouragement, support and kindness, especially to neighbors and friends. She always said you never know how a helpful word or gesture can have a lasting effect and she never missed an opportunity to show kindness and generosity. (Proverbs 31:26 – “She opens her mouth with wisdom and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue”)
A funeral service for Violet will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025 at Blue Ridge Funeral Home chapel at 11:00 am. Friends may gather beginning at 10:00 am. Entombment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens as she is laid to rest beside her husband.
Her grandsons will humbly serve her as pall bearers. Honorary pall bearers are her son and sons in law, whom she referred to as her sons. Because of their deep love and respect for her, it is their great honor and desire to serve their Nan and Mom one last time at her home-going. No person was ever honored for what they received, but rather for what they gave and Nan gave everything.
The family would like to thank all the staff and nurses from Peyton Hospice House in Lewisburg and most recently Hospice of Southern WV, Bowers Hospice House in Beckley for the exceptional physical, emotional, and spiritual care they provided not only to their mother, but to them as well as they cared for her at her home. Their service and help was extraordinary.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her honor can be made to Hospice of Southern West Virginia or Camp Creek Community Church (15371 Beckley Road, Camp Creek WV 25820).
