On Friday August 28th 1st Lieutenant Walter R. Bateman, U.S. Army Air Force will be arriving at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) on Southwest Airlines flight #1684 at 6:15 PM. There will be a Dignified Transfer Ceremony on the tarmac to carry him from the plane to the hearse.
After the transfer, Lt. Bateman will be escorted to the Schimunek Funeral Home, 610 W. MacPhail Rd, Bel Air, MD 21014. If the flight is on time, Lt. Bateman should arrive approximately 8:00 PM.
THE PUBLIC IS INVITED TO COME TO THE FUNERAL HOME AND WELCOME LT. Bateman home.
After Lt. Bateman is carried into the funeral home, the public is invited in to pay their respects and sign the guest book until 9pm.
Lt. Bateman was a pilot with the 67 Bombardment Squadron, 44th Bombardment Group, Heavy. There were 10 crew members on board and no survivors. His plane was last seen burning on the Italian beach believed to be Capo Stilo.
His funeral will be on Sunday, September 6th at 1230 PM at the Union Chapel United Methodist Church, 1012 Old Joppa Rd, Joppa, MD and interment following the service in the church's cemetery.
