Ann was born on June 28, 1940 in New York City to her parents John and Catherine (Collins) O’Malley. Raised as a devout Catholic girl in The Bronx borough of New York City, Ann had planned to become a nun. But then, her older sister’s double date partner dropped out of an important date at the last minute, and Ann was hurriedly pressed into service as a stand in, even though she was underage at the time. She met George Naused on that date, and after three years of courtship, she agreed to change her habit, so to speak, and marry George. But first he had to agree to a large family, maybe with six children! He did, and they married on October 3, 1959.
They moved to Long Island and settled in Stony Brook, where they raised their four children. Ann was active in St. James Roman Catholic Church. She and George moved to Maryland in 1988 and have lived in and around Bel Air since then. Ann was active in St. Margaret Church in Bel Air and in the past year found what she called her spiritual home at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Loch Raven.
A lifelong New York Rangers fan, she learned that by not watching their games, they would win. So, she nervously peeked at the TV during the 1994 Stanley Cup playoff, when her Rangers did finally win the Stanley Cup after a 40-year drought.
Although diagnosed with cancer in 2013, she continued to live life to the fullest. She traveled, took care of husband George during his illness and final days, and was an inspiration to other patients battling cholangiocarcinoma. In 2018, Ann traveled to Ireland and showed her daughter and granddaughter her parents’ homesteads; topping out at 10,000 steps per day. Last April she decided it was time to try parasailing and she did so over the Gulf of Mexico with her daughters and granddaughters.
In her final hours, she expressed her love for her family, especially her grandchildren, of whom she was immeasurably proud. Father Joseph Muth of St. Matthew administered Last Rites, and even though asleep, that Catholic upbringing roused her spirit and she moved as if to react as Fr. Joe and the family prayed. She then left her physical being to join her husband George in eternal life.
She is survived by her four children Eileen Naused, Catherine Stewart (Steven), John Naused (Katharine Neufeld) and Carolyn Kunhardt (Bradley), as well as grandchildren: Dr. Katie Lynn Stewart, Amanda Cantwell (Will), and Gretchen and Morgen Kunhardt.
