Born in the coal-mining mountain town of Beckley, West Virginia, Betty spent much of her life in Baltimore, Maryland, where she would build a life rooted in faith, family & love. As a young woman, she worked at Sears before dedicating herself to raising her family as a homemaker, creating a warm & welcoming home. She was a devoted wife to her beloved husband, Joseph A. Serio, and a loving mother whose greatest joy came from caring for her daughter & those she loved.
A faithful member of St. Michael the Archangel Church in Overlea, MD, Betty generously volunteered her time & talents to her parish community. Her faith was reflected in the kindness, compassion, & quiet strength she shared with others.
Later in life, Betty moved to the mountains of Western North Carolina, where she enjoyed the beautiful scenery & the slower pace of mountain living. She found happiness in tending her garden, reading a good book, attending local festivals & spending time with her family. Though she loved her adopted mountain home, she never lost her affection for Maryland & looked forward to summers enjoying MD steamed crabs shipped to her home in NC.
More than anything, Betty treasured her family. She was a devoted mother to Jennifer J. Serio & welcomed Jennifer’s fiancé, Brian Espinoza of Inman, South Carolina, into her family. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Emerson M. Brooks & Benjamin J. Brooks, whose visits, laughter & accomplishments brought her endless joy. Some of her happiest moments were those spent together with the people she loved most.
Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 44 years, Joseph A. Serio, and her brother, Charles A. Johnson “Chuck” of Glen Burnie, MD.
Those who knew Betty will remember her caring heart & unwavering devotion to family & friends. She leaves behind a legacy of love, family & community that will continue to guide and inspire those fortunate enough to have known her.
