

Francis Bernard "Bernie" Cavey, an insurance broker who served in World War II and was deployed in the first wave on D Day, died of an aneurism on June 20, 2016 at Upper Chesapeake Hospital. He was 91. After serving in World World ii, Bernie started working in the insurance business. He met Betty Lou Webster and they were married on 12/7/47. They had one son, Buzzy who was born on 12/31/48. During the time they lived in Brooklyn MD on the second floor at Betty's fathers' home. Later the family purchased a home in the Hamilton community in Baltimore City. As his son Buzzy grew, Bernie became very involved in the Boy Scouts where he was the Club Master at St. John Methodist Church in Hamilton. He remained active in scouting for many years. In addition to scouting, Bernie also had a love for baseball and became the manager for the Kiwanis Little League team where his son was a pitcher. Later he became president of the program. He was a long time member of the South Baltimore Kiwanis Club where he became president for 13 years and was given the Hixson award for his outstanding years of service. He also found time to teach Sunday school. Bernie was also a devoted grandfather to his grandson, David who shared his love of baseball especially the Orioles. Bernie's grandson David attended Battle Monument School in Dundalk for several years and while there Bernie became very active at the school and under wrote the graduation classes for 22 years. Bernie and his family then moved to the Bel Air area in Harford County. Bernie enjoyed a rich professional life as well. At the time of his death, he was still working and served as owner of Thomas J. Cavey & Son Insurance Co. in South Baltimore where he had been for over 60 years. After 63 years of marriage, his devoted wife Betty Lou passed away in 2010 and his beloved son Buzzy passed away in 2012. He is survived by his grandson, David, daughter-in-law, Connie, brother-in-law, Milton, niece Karen, nephew Steve and their families and many friends..
Relatives and friends are invited to gather at Schimunek Funeral Home, 610 W. MacPhail Road on Thursday from 3-5 and 7-9 pm, where a funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 am.
