Frederick Christian Rohlfing Sr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 10, 2018 in his Forest Hill home in Harford County, MD. He was born on July 29, 1945 in Baltimore, MD to Charles Rohlfing Sr. and Catherine Rohlfing (née Moylan). He lived his entire life in Maryland, where he called home.
Fred graduated from Calvert Hall College High School and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Baltimore. After serving in the Army National Guard, he married the love of his life, Antoinette “Cookie” Rohlfing (née Brown) in 1971 surrounded by family and friends. Together, the lived in Baltimore where they raised their two children, Frederick Rohlfing Jr. and Candice Nies. He worked many years for Bell Atlantic Telephone Company, then spent over 20 years working at the University of Maryland School of Social Work where he trained people on policies and procedures. He retired in late 2015.
Fred was the definition of a family man. As his children grew older, the family moved to Forest Hill, MD. Fred and Cookie always said they would live in the country, and they did just that. He loved taking afternoon walks around the yard with the family dogs after work, chopping wood and mowing the lawn.
Fred was the perfect father and husband. He always looked out for the well-being of his children and guided them on their path. He was always there to listen and provide his wisdom. He loved his family, friends and extended family.
Other than being dedicated to his family, Fred had a life-long passion for trains. This passion stemmed from his own father being a train enthusiast and collector. He was an avid collector of O-gauge Lionel and MTH trains, as well as a long time member of the Train Collectors Association. Just like his father, he built many train gardens in his time that were loved by all.
Fred was the life of the party and was always up for a good joke. He always had a colorful story to tell. He will be greatly missed by those closest to him.
He is survived by his wife, Antoinette “Cookie” Rohlfing, children, Frederick Rohlfing Jr. and Candice Nies, son-in-law, Christopher Nies, grandchildren, Emily and Addison Nies and brother, Charles Rohlfing Jr.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Humane Society of Harford County at 2208 Connolly Road, Fallston, MD 210
