Arthur “George” Naused, age 83, of Willrich Circle in Forest Hill, Maryland, died on February 16, 2017 after a bout with cancer. It’s one of the few fights George ever lost. He died in his sleep at Hooper House hospice with his wife, Ann O’Malley Naused, and son, John Naused, at his bedside at 9:00 AM.
George was born in The Bronx borough of New York City in 1933. His childhood alternated between escapades in the alleys, streets and rivers of The Bronx and farm living with his German-American uncles and aunts in Pennsylvania. His boyhood bicycle and canoe explorations of The Bronx with the Boy Scouts, and his fondness for a homemade crystal radio he built in Pennsylvania would all factor into his adult life.
In 1952, George enlisted in the US Air Force, and he served as a communications technician until his discharge in 1956, having attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. Serving in several postings, George most notably ran a unit of mobile communications in Germany and France during the post-World War II, early Cold War period. Using his boyhood radio skills, George helped land numerous planes through pea soup fog and worse, setting up comms at remote fields to guide lost planes to safety. Using his street smarts earned in The Bronx, George was a successful negotiator, learning to trade bottles of French wine for after-hours use of Jeeps and weekend off passes. On one such weekend, he was able to locate his family’s German hometown of Inglestadt, and meet several relatives.
In 1959 and back in The Bronx, George was married to a pretty, dark-haired Bronx Irish girl, Ann O’Malley, after a three-year courtship. More about this in a bit.
Working in an industrial equipment setting after leaving the service, George was called to duty again, this time as an officer on the New York City Police force. He formally earned his badge in 1962, and served in a variety of historically tough precincts in Harlem and The Bronx during his time with New York’s finest. George was in danger many times, but avoided the use of his service revolver, preferring instead to use his wiles and non-lethal means to subdue suspects. As noted above, he rarely lost a fight – except with an ornery police motor scooter which slid out from under him on duty, causing a severe shoulder injury. Soon after, George received a line of duty medical discharge from the NYPD and began a second law enforcement career in security for the Shoreham nuclear power plant, near his then home in Stony Brook, Long Island, NY. After moving to Maryland in 1988, George continued to serve as a Federal police officer for the Veterans Administration.
George and Ann had been introduced by Ann’s sister, Eileen, and in recent years George still recalled the pretty black and white outfit Ann wore for their first date. They remained devoted husband and wife right up until George’s final moments. Together, they raised four children, and have been blessed with four grandchildren. They lived together in The Bronx, NYC, on Long Island, NY, and since 1988 in Harford County, Maryland. George enjoyed spending time heading to the beaches in Delaware and North Carolina, especially with grandchildren in tow. He was active in his church parishes in Stony Brook, NY and Bel Air, MD as well as fraternal organizations including the Knights of Columbus.
George is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ann O’Malley Naused, his daughters Eileen Naused, Catherine (Mrs. Steven) Stewart, and Carolyn (Mrs. Bradley) Kunhardt, his son John Naused and his wife Katharine Neufeld, as well as grandchildren Katie Lynn Stewart, Amanda (Mrs. Will Cantwell), and Gretchen and Morgen Kunhardt.
