Jerry was a self taught, street smart kid from Baltimore with a 10th grade education, raised by his mother. Jerry enlisted in the US Army when he was just 17 yrs old by lying about his age. He qualified as an “expert gunner” and served a tour in Germany. After returning to the US, he met and married the love of his life Janet Marie Runyon in 1963. They have three daughters together, Alisa Ann Brown of Baldwin, MD, Kimberly Dawn Horsham of Kingsville, MD, and Jeri Marie Snelling of Wilmington, NC. The family moved to Chicago in 1969 where Jerry owned and operated a tavern, ambulance company and a tire vulcanizing shop. In 1976 Jerry brought the family back to Maryland and built a home in Kingsville.
Jerry owned and operated Jerry’s Auto Repair on 25thStreet in Baltimore and in 1985 opened Professional Ambulance in Glen Burnie. After a merger in 1994 the business was renamed Chesapeake Ambulance and moved to Arbutus.
Jerry was instrumental in bringing publicly traded medical transportation companies to Maryland in 1997 when he sold Chesapeake Ambulance to the Transcare Corp of New York.
Jerry was an unforgettably likable person, known for his unique wit and sense of humor and uncommon natural sense for business. He loved thoroughbred racing and owned several race horses.
He spent his retirement surrounded by his family doing what he loved most, fishing in Crisfield and Ocean City, hunting on Maryland’s eastern shore and spending time at his cabin in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia.
