Mr. Jim and Miss Janette were my next door neighbors from the early 70's to 1988 when Robin and I got married. I considered them my third set of grand parents. In the 70's, Mr Jim bought a Revell model of a 4-Stacker "Tin Can" destroyer just like DD-246 USS Bainbridge he served on in WWII and had me build it for him. A few years ago I was browsing the model selection in the hobby store and found a re-issue of the same kit and built it as a tribute to him. I loved hearing his stories (mostly of getting seasick), but the one that stands out was his story of escorting a Battleship he thought was the USS South Dakota, but later finding out it was the new USS Wisconsin on its first deployment, or shakedown. (I could have the ships wrong). Last time I saw him, the day before Thanksgiving 2016, I asked if he still had the model, but he said he didn't know what happened to it.
Another great memory of Mr Jim was hearing him laughing, trying to describe the "beans eating" scene in Blazing Saddles in our back porch one summer night back in 1974 when the movie came out. One of my all-time favorite movies.
Rest in Peace.
