James, known to his friends and family as Jim or Donald depending on when in life you met him, was born on February 19, 1939 in Baltimore, Maryland. His family’s stall name in Lexington Market can still be found on old Postcards. He was the Son of Richard and Mary Sellman. He grew up in Baltimore and developed a deep love for the community he called home.
Jim/Donald was a proud graduate of Calvert Hall and after serving his country in the Army, he pursued a career in law enforcement and investigation for Amoco Oil Company. He was known for his laughter, dedication, and a commitment to living in the moment in all that he did. He worked for Bel Air Auto Auction in his retirement for 15 years – and enjoyed making friends and drinking free coffee.
He was a devoted husband to Janice Sellman, and together they shared 37 years of marriage. He was also a proud and loving father to Sean Sellman (Deborah Sellman), Brent Sellman (Deborah Sellman), Nicole Funk (Tim Funk), Craig Sellman (Teresa Sellman), Reid Sellman (Cristi Sellman), Eric Benjamin (Megan Benjamin), grandfather to Lauren, Austin, Donovan, Justin, Matthew, Kaitlyn, Lumi, Isobel, Audrey and Everette, great-grandfather to Brynn and Keighyn. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Catherine Smith and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, John Sellman and nephew Ricky Sellman.
Jim/Donald had a passion for gardening and fishing. He enjoyed traveling with Janice, especially to see friends in Florida. He was known for his sense of humor and the love of telling a long story.
Jim/Donald’s memory will be cherished by all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of crossing his path.
A celebrate of Jim/Donald’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Kaufman Cancer Center or the Fisher House Foundation in his name.
