Marina Kotselas

Born on March 14, 1931 in Sella, Greece, Marina was a true pioneer. She came to the United States in 1958 to attend Rider College, where she graduated in 1962. She became the first woman in her village to earn a college degree, an achievement that reflected her determination.

Marina lived a life defined by faith, leadership and service. After moving to Northern Virginia to raise her family, she became a fixture at St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church. There she served many roles including President of the Philoptochos Society and making history as the first female President of the Parish Council. She enthusiastically shared her passion for the Greek culture and faith by teaching Sunday School, Greek School and Greek Dance. She was truly a faithful, dedicated parishioner and an inspiring role model.

Her greatest joy, however, was her family. Marina was the cherished wife of the late Dr. Evangelos Kotselas and the loving mother of her daughter Nicolle Mattes and husband Peter; daughter Deme Ann Lomis and husband Van; and son Costa Kotselas.

She was the proud and devoted grandmother of six grandchildren: Costa, Evan, Luke, Mary, Deana, and Angelique. Her generosity, strength, and unconditional love will remain a lasting legacy for her family and for all whose lives she touched.

Marina will be remembered for her perseverance, compassion and steadfast faith. She set an example as a trailblazer for women in church leadership and community service. She inspired generations through her quiet strength, humility and unwavering commitment to helping others.

Family will receive friends at Schimunek Funeral Home, 610 W. MacPhail Road, Bel Air, Maryland 21014 on Friday, July 24 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Trisagion Service at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 25 at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2504 Cub Hill Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21234

Lying in state at 11:30 a.m. with the Funeral Service at 12 noon. Interment will follow at the St. Demetrios Church Cemetery

The traditional Makaria will be held at the church fellowship hall, the Hermes Rafailides Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church at 2504 Cub Hill Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21234
