I've struggled to find the words, and I don't think the reality has quite set in yet...it was truly an honor being Mike's little brother. He was always there for me whenever I needed to talk. My dad hasn't ever really been in the picture, but Mike played that role whenever I needed him to do so and he did it with love and joy. I will always look fondly on all of our sports moments, like when Petr Nedved scored the game winning goal against the Capitals with 15 seconds left in the 7th period (it was 4 in the morning). We were beating our fists on the top of US Air Arena, it was so exciting (that was in 1996). Mike will be missed, but it gives me comfort knowing that he is in a much better place and that we will see him again before we know it.

It's sad to hear of your passing Mike, I truly had the pleasure of knowing you for around 40 years. You were a great friend a mentor and someone I could turn to for advice or help.  I remember the time I met you through the "Big Brother program " Mr. Harvey and my guidance counselor introduced you to me. I was a very shy young boy at that time and yet you were willing to be my big brother.  It took awhile for me to come out of my shell but you didn't give up on me and I thank you for being a great big brother to me and  remaining close friends even when the program ended.  There is alot of people who are lucky to have had you in their lives and I was blessed to have such a great friend like you in mine.  Mike you got to watch me grow up from like the time I was I believe 8 or 9 years old  well into my 40's now I'm almost 50 now . That's along time , You got to watch me grow up into an adult,  And the last time I remember seeing you at your house seeing your surprise look on your face when you saw me when I came over after work,  You knowing that the job I was doing was a dangerous one but you was proud of me for doing so well.  I have you to thank for it helping me in my younger years.  I'm truly grateful that you and I were such good friends into my later years. Mike you just wasn't a friend to me you were family to me. I will miss you my friend and Brother  R.I.P  ..  Until we meet up again

It is with a heavy heart and tears of sadness that I write about
my "brother" Michael Yuran. Yes, I was adopted into the family                      by Mrs Yuran back in 1972. I will forever cherish the memories

Mike and I worked together as mathematicians at Aberdeen Proving Ground for 17 years.  Prior to those years I had met Mike when he worked for my late husband Herry Hall.
Mike was always a very friendly, kind hearted, caring and fun loving guy who always had a sincere smile for everyone.  He was a religious man who loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them.  He also treasured many longtime  friendships.
Mike was a true sports enthusiast who attended numerous sporting events during his lifetime.
I send my heartfelt sympathy to Mike's family and close friends.  I know he will be greatly missed.  RIP,  Mike.


My condolences and prayers are with the family and friends of Mike during this time.  I had the pleasure of working with Mike for many years at APG.  Mike and I were amongst the older generation who didn't mind printing out things so we could have a hard copy of our work.  The younger employees found this hilarious.  Mike didn't care...lol.  I'm almost sure we owe the government reams and reams of paper.  Mike was a kind-hearted person and I enjoyed working with him.   He was missed when he retired.  I begged him to take me on retirement with him, but he told me my time would come...eventually.  Rest in Peace Mike!

The complete lack of detail in Mike’s obituary is a total disgrace in honoring the memory of the wonderful person Mike was.  Through the assistance of his close friends, I would like to provide the proper tribute Mike deserves.

Mike was born in Johnstown, PA on July 15, 1954 to Michael & Amelia Yuran.  Mike was the oldest in the family, followed by sister, Debbie, & me, the baby of the family.  Mike graduated in 1976 with a BS in Mathematics from University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.  While in college, Mike was very active in Delta Sigma Chi Fraternity & maintained close friendships with many of his fraternity brothers until the end.

Mike had several jobs after college until he got a job at the U.S. Army Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) in 1979.  Mike proudly served our country as a civilian for 30+ years at APG with various organizations.    He worked on ballistics data reduction &  analysis & wrote reports on the test results.  Mike’s work at APG  took him to locations like El Paso, TX; New Orleans, LA; Los Angeles, CA; & Las Vegas, NV.    Mike was merited with several awards for his outstanding performance at APG.  Mike made many wonderful friendships while at APG, these friends have remained loyal true friends until the very end. 

Mike believed in giving back to his community and volunteered his time to Aberdeen JC's, was a big brother to two boys (who he remained in contact with up until his passing), taught CCD at his local church.  He also worked part time in assisting people with their income tax for 15+ years.  He coached women's softball teams at APG and Havre de Grace.    He was also an avid sports fan and attended a lot of sporting events such as baseball, football and hockey with his friends.  Through the years, he always was a loyal supporter of his Pittsburgh teams. 

Mike is survived by his wife, Angie; his sisters, Debbie Gorentz and Tina Perez; his nieces, Melissa Whalen, Melinda Gorentz, & Katie Phillips; & his great-nieces, Hailey & Mia Whalen.

My condolences go out to Mike's family for their loss.  I worked along side Mike in the same office for about 15 years.  Mike always enjoyed making other people happy.  I believe that is why he managed/supplied our office's snack fund for so many years.  He always kept the snack table stocked with many goodies and had a big smile on his face when customers would come by to partake in the fruits of his labor.  He will be missed by everyone that his good deeds touched throughout his life.

I am so sad to hear of Mike's passing.  He was truly a good guy, a gentle guy, and he lived his life with integrity.     He and I would banter back and forth about the Steelers and the Ravens.  If the Ravens would beat the Steelers he put up with teasing from me but always took it in good stride.  He loved the Steelers but he also loved Baltimore.  I am so sorry for your loss Angie.   He was taken from you much too soon but I know he is at peace now, not suffering.  Mike's life was definitely a life well lived.   Rest in peace.

My Uncle Mike was a loving and kind man.  He loved to laugh and always put a smile on our faces.  He loved his sports.  I have many fond memories of him. When I was younger,  we would feed the ducks at his apartment,  play games at Christmas and lots of laughing together.  I will miss my Uncle Mike always.

Mike was my husband (Gary) and my loving nephew.  Mike and Gary grew up living beside each other.  Mike was five years younger than Gary so they treated each other like brothers.  Both men attended Johnstown High School and the University of Pittsburgh.  They were both in the same fraternity giving hours of service to the community.  Mike and Gary enjoyed cheering for the Steelers, Penguins, and Pitt Panthers.  Gary was employed at APG as an engineer, and Mike worked at APG as an accountant.  Mike lived with us for four months when he came to Maryland.  Those were fun times as both men were great storytellers.  Mike was proud to be in our wedding in1971 when he was only seventeen.  Years later, Gary served as Mike's best man in Mike and Angie's wedding.  Mike was a compassionate and tender hearted man.  Mike served as a Big Brother advocate ( even including our son, Greg in the sport outings with Josh), taught CCD,  and served in the Aberdeen Jaycees with Gary.  Mike has made lasting impressions on many lives with kindness and generosity.  Mike was devoted to his family and wife, Angie, and their dogs.  Please rest in comfort with your mother, father,  gram, uncles, and many friends.

Some of my first and best memories that come to mind when I think of my Uncle Mike are all the times he took me to the movies when I was a kid and getting me all the snacks and popcorn I wanted. He always got me the best gifts and came to celebrate Christmas with us the weekend after. He treated myself and cousins (Melissa and Mindy) like his daughters since he did not have kids of his own. Another vivid memory I have of him was our family at a restaurant and him loudly singing “We’ve Got the Whole World In Our Hands”. He was a huge sports fan, especially his hometown teams like the Steelers and the Pirates. He was the type of person to give the shirt off his back. He was a truly kind person, maybe too kind for his own good sometimes. When he was well he was always full of laughter and stories and smiles. I hope he is at rest with our family members in heaven. 143  


It’s with a heavy heart as I remember my brother whose life was cut short.  Mike’s continual pleas for help to save his life fell on deaf ears. My brother was the kindest and most generous person you would ever meet.  He would do anything to help you out and had touched so many lives for the better.  If you knew my brother, then you knew how much he loved music and was never shy to belt out the words to his favorite songs. Each summer when my girls were small, Mike would drive up from Maryland to Pennsylvania to pick us up to visit my mother and sister. Family meant everything to him!  When we were children, we had to walk everywhere to get around Johnstown.  Many a times, Mike would carry my books home from school for me. He was always an amazing big brother!!! Tina, Mike, and I would spend hours playing board games as children. We were and still are each other’s best friends.  It is rare in life to have such a close-knit family, one where you can always count on each other no matter what. I talked to my brother nearly every day and it breaks my heart that I won’t hear his voice anymore. I am still in disbelief that his life was needlessly cut short. Even the morning of his death, Mike begged us to get him help.  We were told Mike was “fine”, as we weren’t allowed to talk to the nurses/doctors to get him the proper help he needed. My only saving grace is that he is reunited with my Mom, Dad, Gram, Uncle Sonny, Uncle Gary, and Uncle Andy.  Finally, he can no longer be abused and maybe now he can finally have some peace. Mike was one of the kindest humans I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. We met when I was about 5 years old, when he and my brother met through the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program. Every time he saw me, he lifted me up above his head and brought me down for a hug! (That was his favorite story to share anytime we saw one another!) Throughout my childhood and into my adult years, Mike not only remained in Josh’s life, but he made sure to invite my sister Amanda and me to sporting events such as Orioles games and our personal favorite- Baltimore Blast games! About a year and a half ago, I had the pleasure of introducing Mike to my son and fiancé. I was aware that his health hadn’t been great in the last several years, but I’m really struggling with the fact that he’s gone! We love you, Mike and we will always hold the 29+ years of memories we had with you, close to our hearts!

So deeply sorry to hear of Mike's passing, such a tremendous loss. Mike has been part of my family for many years, as he was a "Big Brother" to my son, Josh and their love and friendship continued into adulthood. Mike was generous, kind and always ready to talk sports.  Mike and I were "birthday buddies" and I remember the wonderful times shared with him and Angie, along with my children as we celebrated Mike's, Josh's and my birthdays at Red Lobster.  Thoughts and prayers are with Angie, Phil and Mike's family during this devastating time.

Hi Mrs. Angie, I am so incredibly sad to hear Mr. Mike passed away.  He was always my favorite person to see because he would give me these giant bear hugs than you could just feel the love and kindness radiating from his heart.  You could see how much he loved you whenever he looked at you, he always had a sparkle in his eyes.  Watching the way you both cared and helped each other always filled my heart with joy.  Despite your own illness you always put Mr. Mike first and I am so glad that I got to see how much you loved him & most importantly how much he loved you.  You were always there for him, right by his side & I know that he will always be right at your side.  You guys were both each other soulmates & any person who was actually around you both could see that as plain as day.  I can’t imagine the grief you’re feeling but always remember you were the best thing that ever happened to him and he was the best thing that ever happened to you.  Just remember that even though you can’t see him, he will always be by your side

Given the impersonality in my Uncle’s obituary, I wanted to properly remark on his life and how much he was loved by his family and friends.  Unfortunately, my Uncle’s life was taken too quickly as the direct result of negligence over his care.  My Uncle, Michael Yuran, was one of the most caring individuals you would ever meet and deserved so much more.  He would light-up a room with his smile, contagious laugh, and expressive personality.  Now anyone that truly knows my Uncle can attest to his gift to gab. He would never miss a moment to talk some sports with you, in which he was a devoted Steelers fan being born and raised from Johnstown, PA.  I remember my Uncle making any game he could when coming to visit us in Pittsburgh, PA and how much joy that brought him.  All my sports memorabilia were from my Uncle and I will cherish it forever.  My Uncle loved his family, especially his sisters (Debbie & Tina) more than anything.  While he had no children of his own, my Uncle treated his three nieces (Melissa, Mindy, & Katie) like his own daughters.  I am so thankful that his last memory was talking with his two sisters and blowing them a kiss over Zoom before he passed later that evening.  He was truly the sweetest man and would give the clothes off his back to help anyone.  My Uncle was always there for us, helping my mom with the expenses to be a Majorette in High School, sending his mother and grandmother to Hawaii, a dream of theirs, and helping track down the hottest toy of the year to ensure his nieces always had a magical Christmas.  Growing up, my Uncle and I always referred to each other as Yogi Bear and Boo Boo, a special bond that we shared throughout our lives.  I will carry his memory in my heart for as long as I live.  I am heartbroken over his passing, especially since it was too soon, but at least I know he is now in a better place rejoining his mother, father, grandmother, and Uncles in heaven.
