Robert Joseph Green III of Bel Air, MD died on December 19, 2014 surrounded by loving family and friends he was 63 years old. Bob valiantly battled Multiple Myeloma throughout the last year of his life.
Born in Portchester, NY, his family moved to Connecticut and then to in Towson, MD. He was the son of the late Robert J. Green Jr. and the late Valerie Stuart Green. Bob attended Mt. Washington Academy and Immaculate Conception Elementary Schools and graduated in 1969 from Towson Catholic H.S. He began his career at Alex Brown where he quickly moved into the emerging field of information services. Bob spent the majority of his career working for the Noxell Corporation (15 years), and Martin Marietta (later Lockheed Martin; 25 years). He also worked briefly for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maryland and Provident Mutual Insurance Company. In 2007, Bob joined the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services where he was employed until his death.
Bob married his wife Deborah Daue Green in 1973 and the family lived in Anneslie until moving to Bel Air in 1987. Bob and his wife raised three children, Rob, Jessica and Caroline. From scout master, to soccer coach, to band treasurer, to helping to build a local playground, Bob always enjoyed being involved with his family and community. In recent years, he was appointed to the Harford County Disabilities Commission and was an active member of the Upper Chesapeake Hospital Amputee Support Group.
Throughout his life, Bob inspired others with his strength, courage, and determination. Despite a diagnosis of bacterial meningitis in 2008 that ravaged his body and resulted in loss of his fingers and his ability to walk, he battled back to create what he called his “new normal”. With his determination and the help of doctors, therapists, nurses, family, friends, and countless others, Bob returned to his life. He triumphantly left his wheelchair behind and achieved his goal of “dancing with Deb again”. Bob’s story of his inspiring journey to reclaim his life was featured in professional journals and websites. As he resumed his “new normal”, Bob was featured in the Baltimore Sun in 2011 when he and his close friend Otts Smith won the Baltimore Sun Holiday Cookie Contest. Early in his recovery Bob became a beta tester for an innovative myoelectric prosthetic hand developed by Touch Bionics, and traveled the US and Canada to share his story of resilience and recovery at Rehabilitation Centers and Conferences. Bob took pride in what he had accomplished and was grateful for the help that he received and was always compelled to share his experiences to benefit others.
Those that knew and loved him were made better by his example of making the very best of all that life offers. Bob was a man full of life, music, and laughter. When he wasn’t making people laugh, he could be found singing his heart out to the tunes of Frank Sinatra. Bob loved his family and friends, cruising in convertibles, a round of golf, lounging on the beach with a corona and lime, and sipping on a good scotch with friends. Bob was always amazed and grateful for the love and support he found in those that touched his life.
Bob is survived by his wife Debbie; son Rob, daughter-in-law Kelly and granddaughter Allison; daughter Jessica and son-in law Brent Jeannetta; and daughter Caroline. He is also survived by his sister, Valerie Spangler, her husband John; sister Kathi Tucker and her husband David; brother, Michael Green; brother in law Howard Daue and his wife Patti; sister in law Linda Zang and her husband Joe and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family has decided to establish a fund to share Bob's legacy and help others struggling to reclaim their lives in the way others helped him throughout his journey.
