Born and raised in Vailsburg, Newark, NJ, Robert was a loving husband to the late Antonette M. Jones (nee Lisovicz) for 64 years. He was the beloved father of Robert James Jones, Jr. and his wife Genevieve of Newark/Frelinghuysen, NJ, and of Kathleen Peotter Jones of Newark/New Providence, NJ and Bel Air, MD. He was the adored Pop Pop of Mark Stephen Peotter, Jr., the late Christopher James Peotter, and Brain Jones. The patriarch of the Jones family, ‘Uncle Bob’ is also survived by generations of loving nieces and nephews.
Robert was a veteran of the US Army. During WWII Robert served with the Military Police on Governors Island, NY; he then traveled overseas to assist in the restoration of the railroad in Paris. Following in the footsteps of his father, Robert joined the Newark Police Department in 1955 where he served the West District for 28 years. He was a life-long member of the Superior Officers’ Association and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #12. A dedicated police officer and superior role model, LT Jones retired in 1983.
Robert was a life-long parishioner of Sacred Heart of Vailsburg and was one among the first class to receive First Holy Communion in the ‘new’ church. Robert and his friends spear-headed the Knights of Columbus and dedicated a great deal of time to the Church community. In 1978 Robert and his wife moved to New Providence, NJ, where they were members of Our Lady of Peace and became very involved in the New Providence Senior Citizens club. Throughout the years they enjoyed spending time with family, relaxing at their beach bungalow, and dining and traveling with four couples who were their life-long friends.
In 2010 Robert and Antonette relocated to Bel Air, MD to share their golden years with their daughter and grandsons. A wake service will be held at Schimunek Funeral Home, 610 W MacPhail Road, Bel Air, MD on Thursday 28 June 2018 from 6-9 pm. A gathering/viewing will be held in the narthex of St. Mark Church, 2407 Laurel Brook Road, Fallston, MD on Friday 29 June 2018 at 10 am, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 am and military honors.
