On Monday February 22, 2021, Steven "Gus" F. Philip, age 70, of Essex, MD, passed away peacefully at home after a long illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Bonita Horne; devoted brothers John Philip, and wife Donna, of Bel Air, MD; Patrick Philip, and wife Millie, of Baltimore, MD; and Michael Philip, of Lusby, MD; brothers-in-law Zac Horne, and wife Jan, of Mechanicsville, MD, and Rodger Horne (deceased), and wife Marcia, of Sebring, FL; sisters-in-law Dena Horne, of Baltimore, MD, and Bridget Penser, and husband George, of Mechanicsville, MD, his new puppy, Max, as well as many nieces, nephews, fellow boaters, and lifelong friends.
Born in Baltimore, Gus was the second eldest son of the late Chief Boatswain Mate, Leo John Philip, and Virginia Ann Philip (nee Ray). After graduating from Mergenthaler Vocational High School in 1969, Gus was an ARE, Automobile Relocation Engineer, in the trucking industry for over 45 years.
Gus was an active member of the Essex Motorcycle Club from 1981-1992. He enjoyed cruising the streets on his Full Dresser Harley.
As the son of a career Coast Guard sailor, Gus loved being on the water. In 1993, Gus joined the Middle River Yacht Club where he docked his boat "Crashes Pad". In 1997, he was elevated to the post of Commodore of the Middle River Yacht Club. After many years with smaller boats, Gus and Bonita finally realized their dream of owning a 38 foot Catamaran which they named "WeDiDit". Gus remained a proud member, and friend of the yacht club until his passing. Some of his greatest days were spent traveling on his boat, fishing, and laughing with Bonita, and his many friends from the MRYC.
A Celebration of life is tentatively planned for July 10, 2021 at the Middle River Yacht Club, 200 Nanticoke Rd., Essex, MD 21221 (pending Covid-19 restrictions).
