

Mr. Nickel was born on September 19, 1944, in Baltimore, MD, and was the son of the late Elmer and Bessie Nickel. He is a graduate of the University of Baltimore and took great pride serving his country in the US Air Force. Mr. Nickel married Gail (nee Fannella) in 1968 and later welcomed their daughter Susan into their lives. The Nickels resided in Churchville then later moved to Bel Air, their current home. Mr. Nickel had a successful career as a software consultant and retired from Dentsply due to his health. He enjoyed volunteering his time with the Churchville Ruritan. He was a member of The Bel Air American Legion, and a longtime member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, having served as an usher, finance committee member, and on the Parish Council. He also was an avid card player and loved playing cards with friends at the McFaul Activity Center. Mr. Nickel is survived by an extensive list of family and friends including: his wife, Gail; daughter, Susan Amato; son-in-law, James Amato; and brother-in- law, Joseph (Steven) Fannella. He is also survived by the shining lights in his life, grandson, Nicholas and granddaughter, Claire. He particularly looked forward to spending the winters in Texas with his daughter, son- in-law, and grandchildren. Mr. Nickel was predeceased by three brothers, Wilmer Ward, Charles Krabitz, and Richard Nickel as well as his sister Gertrude Hofferbert.
Friends, family, and acquaintances may call Friday, March 6th, at the Schimunek Funeral Home on West MacPhail Road in Bel Air from 2 until 5 in the afternoon and also 7 to 9 in the evening. A mass will be held Saturday, March 7th, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church at 222 South Law Street, Aberdeen, MD at 11:30 a.m. Following the service, a luncheon will be held at the Richlin Ballroom located at 1700 Van Bibber Road, Edgewood, MD.
