After graduating from Newark Valley High School, Class of 1968, he went on to join the US Navy as an Electronics Technician, retiring in 1994 as a Sr. Master Chief, and serving as Command Master Chief of the U.S. Navy while stationed in Kansas City, Mo. During his distinguished 26-year US Naval career, he would serve in the Vietnam War, while also being stationed with family in Honolulu HI, Jacksonville FL, Philadelphia PA, Kansas City MO, and Newport RI. While serving in the Navy Joel would attend the US Naval War College, and earn several Decorations and Commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Civil Actions Medal, Two Navy Commendation Medals, and Surface Warfare Specialist. While still in the Navy he would earn his BA from the State University of New York, and following retirement completed his MA in Organizational Management from Baker University.
In 1969, he married his beloved wife, Theresa, in a beautiful ceremony at their hometown church. Together, they raised two children: Son Chris, and daughter Tina. Joel was a very devoted father, known for his youth coaching and presence at his children's sporting events and school activities.
Joel’s hobbies over the years included his love of golf, running, bowling, and racquetball. He loved music and was a talented organist in his younger years. His interests over his adult years were as rich and varied as his professional life.
Sadly, Joel was predeceased by his parents and sister-in-law Penny. His memory will forever be held in the hearts of his surviving family: his wife, Theresa; his children, Chris, Tina, son-in-law Dave; his two grandchildren, Kyler and Drew; his siblings Jerry, Noel, Shale, Joy, and brother-in law Richard and mother-in-law Mildred.
A memorial service and military recognition will be held on April 17, 2024, 4:00PM in Belton, Mo. at the McGilley George Funeral Home. Joel will be laid to rest in his hometown of Newark Valley, NY.
Joel Larae Spangenburg will always be remembered for his sense of humor, and as a loving son, husband, father, and grandfather.
