Lela (Shanahan) Handley, 93, of Belton, MO took her well-deserved place as a saint in Heaven on July 22, 2014. Born to Paul & Mary (Ohlert) Shanahan on December 4, 1920 in rural Johnson County, KS, she married Kenneth Lee Handley on May 18, 1940 and had one son, Gary (married to Kala (Casebier) Handley). Lela served as an ambassador for CrossRoads UMC, a Worthy Matron in Eastern Star, and volunteered at Research Belton Hospital. She worked at the Grace Company, Richards-Gebaur Base Exchange, Turk's Grocery, and retired after 25 years as a clerk for the Belton Post Office. Lela is preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth, and sisters Lillian, Clara, Lucille, and Catherine. She is survived by her son Gary and his wife Kala; grandchildren Erica (and husband Chris Williams) and Daniel Handley; great grandchildren Chelsea (and husband Yasha Kuzmin), Elizabeth (Williams), Ethan, and Christian; great grandson Liam Kuzmin; several cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 9-11 am Saturday, July 26 at CrossRoads UMC, 515 E. Markey Pkwy in Belton, with a service following at 11:00 am. A graveside service will be held in the Belton Cemetery afterward. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations go to CrossRoads UMC. I am sorry this is so late but I just learned of your Mother's death. I have such fond memories of her as our back door neighbor and my Mother's best friend. She was always so kind and helpful. My sympathy to you and your family.
