Luisa Patricia ‘Pat’ Lagud was born October 5,1945 to Juan Oñate Rosas and Ruth Madrid de Onate in Osorno, Chile and passed from this life surrounded by her family July 31, 2019. They say the most important part of a person’s life is not the day they’re born or the day they pass, but the dash dividing the two. Pat’s dash was a good one.
She met the love of her life when she was just 18. He was a dashing Marine on detail guarding the US Embassy in Santiago, Chile and the moment they met that was it for both of them. Fred and Pat spent 53 incredible years together. Not long after they met, they married and moved back to the States to begin their lives together. They eventually ended up in Latour, MO where they raised their two sons, Fred Jr and Jimmy. Pat taught herself how to cook, and how to speak English, using cookbooks and television! When her oldest son, Fred was learning the constitution in Junior High, she was learning it as well, in order to become a naturalized citizen. Fred was so proud of her he took her to school to speak to his class and they had a party for her to celebrate her citizenship!
Pat filled her days trying to keep Fred in line, which in and of itself was a full-time job, she loved gardening and crocheting. She had the most amazing garden every year. One year when Jimmy was about 4 or 5 they grew a sweet potato so large the local newspaper came to take a picture of Jimmy holding it. It seemed that potato was almost as big as he was! For the past 20 years she and Fred traveled to Texas and spent the winters with a group of friends that became family to them. Pat spoke often and warmly about all the fun she had with their friends and missed them when they came back to Missouri every spring. She very much looked forward to “happy hour” every evening and her shopping trips with all of them. Her Faith was also very important to her. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church for more than 40 years.
I believe, more than anything, Pat’s greatest Joy was her family. She was never happier than when she was surrounded by her children, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She absolutely lit up when she got to see them and looked forward to the times she would be able to see them again. Pat has left an incredible legacy of love behind her and she will be missed.
Visitation will be 2-3 pm, celebration of life at 3:00 pm Friday, August 9 at McGilley & George Funeral Home, 12913 Grandview Rd, Grandview, MO.
