Richard was born on November 13, 1951, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Charles and Francis (Lindquist) Boggs. On June 22, 1972, Richard married the love of his life, Paula (Goad) Boggs. Their 36 years together were filled with travel, laughter, and countless adventures before her passing. In time, Richard was fortunate to find love again with Patty (Schaller) Elkins, whom he married on May 31, 2009. Together they created a warm, lively, blended family that brought Richard immense joy.
In 1974, Richard answered the call to serve his country, beginning a distinguished career with the United States Army. Over more than 25 years, he served with honor and dedication, retiring in 2000 as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 (Maintenance Warrant). He was proud of his service and often shared stories from his time in uniform—always with his trademark humor and a healthy dose of sarcasm. His discipline, leadership, and loyalty left a lasting mark on those who served beside him.
Family was at the center of Richard’s life. He loved being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and he never missed an opportunity to share his favorite stories, often leaving his loved ones laughing at his quick wit and dry humor. Watching his family grow through each generation was one of his greatest joys, and he took pride in every role he held within it.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, his first wife, Paula, and his brother Robert Boggs. He is survived by his devoted wife, Patty, and their children: Bobbi Gregory; Richard Boggs Jr. (Michelle); Robert Elkins (Melissa); Richard Elkins (Dana); Natalie Simmons (Robert); Pam Miller (Brian); Randy Elkins (Jamie); and Richard Crossland (Jamie). He also leaves behind his brother, Charles Boggs (Candy), 44 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a host of in-laws who loved him dearly. The family extends special gratitude to Traci and Mike Williams for their constant love and support during Richard’s final days.
Richard will be remembered as a man of strength and integrity, a loyal soldier, and above all, a devoted family man. His humor, warmth, and unwavering dedication to those he loved will continue to inspire all who knew him. His presence will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
Services honoring Richard will be held on Sunday, September 28 at 11:00am, Raymore Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest with military honors. A celebration of his life will follow at Centerview Event Center, 227 Municipal Circle, Raymore, Missouri.
We welcome all who knew and loved him to come share memories, support one another, and celebrate the incredible life he lived.
We would love for you to contribute to Paralyzed Veterans of America instead of sending flowers. They helped us so much with resources, grants, and support after Dad’s diagnosis with ALS.
