Cecil A. Gooden, 86, of Beverly Hills, FL and formerly of Olney, MD, passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2021 at UF Health Shands Hospital, Gainesville, FL. A native of Westmoreland, Jamaica, he was born on July 31, 1934.
Cecil grew up in Sheffield, Jamaica and in 1960 he moved to Kingston. He was employed there by the Jamaica OmniBus Service for many years as a driver. He migrated to the United States in 1970 and settled in the Maryland/Washington D.C. area. He enjoyed a career of over 30 years with Potomac Electric Company (PEPCO) as a meter technician and Giant Food Company as a cashier. In 2002 he retired and moved to Beverly Hills, FL where he resided until his death.
He was a devoted husband to Mary, and a loving father to Christopher. Cecil was a family man. He was an excellent provider and was the backbone of the family. Cecil always offered an open door to his nieces and nephews who were always welcome in his home. He enjoyed swimming and watching sports and was an ardent Washington Football Team fan, who supported the team whether they were winning or loosing. Cecil took pleasure in working on his yard and vehicles, always maintaining them impeccably. He enjoyed travelling and entertaining friends and family in his home.
He was a mild mannered, good natured person who was loved by many. He enjoyed a healthy social life with his many friends in Maryland, many of whom were lifelong friends. After he retired, he encountered health challenges that limited his ability to engage in many social activities.
Although he was ailing, he passed away unexpectedly, after being hospitalized for a short time. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his family and deacon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Frank. Left to cherish his loving memories are his wife Mary, son, Christopher, cousins Monica Rhule and Vincent Rhule, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
