He was born in Amarillo, TX on February 15, 1955, to David and LaVern (McWhorter) Sowell and was one of three children. In 1982 he married his college sweetheart, Debi Olsen Sowell. In 1987, they moved to Beverly Hills, FL and finally to Lecanto, FL where they raised their family.
David had a long and respected career working with Duke Energy for 28 years where he worked on the line crew, as a Turbine Mechanic and part of the traveling outage crew (SMC). Known for his strong work ethic and dedication, he was a mentor to many and a friend to all who worked with him.
David enjoyed starting his day with the daily crossword and sudoku puzzles from the Citrus County Chronicle. An avid outdoorsman, he found joy in snow skiing, fishing, air boating and especially hunting deer, hog and turkey at his beloved barn in Otter Creek. Cooking, grilling and smoking food were some of his greatest joys.
He was also a talented handyman who could fix just about anything – from cars to motorcycles and boats and had a green thumb for growing a variety of plants.
David was preceded in death by his parents, his Aunt Margaret and Uncle Buck and Aunt LoRhea Morgan. He is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Debi Sowell; his children Danielle Mattson (Brandon) of Lecanto, FL; Ryan Sowell (Kristyn Wood) of Carriere, MS; his cherished grandchildren, Dakota and Taylor Mattson; and siblings Diana Magee (Curt) of Mineola, TX and Dennis Sowell (Anne) of Seguin, TX.
