Richard Anthony Marciano, Sr., 79, passed away swiftly and unexpectedly on Saturday, December 11, 2010, at his winter home in Lecanto, Florida. Born on April 30, 1931, the fourth child of Anthony and Lena Marciano, he was raised in Belmont, MA, lived much of his adult life in Andover, MA, and spent his retirement in Standish ME and Lecanto FL, where he was a parishioner at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Betty Marciano; five children, Robyn Huck of Woodstock VT, Richard Marciano, Jr. of Buxton ME, James Marciano of Amherst NH, John Marciano of Andover MA, and Elizabeth Ross of Standish ME; three siblings: Peter Marciano of Medford, MA and his wife Mary; Arthur Marciano of Stamford CT and Tequesta FL; and Frances Vaccaro of Windham, NH; two sons-in-law, Karl Huck and Jonathan Ross, two daughters-in-law, Nancy Marciano and Liane Marciano; and eleven grandchildren.
An avid baseball, soccer, and basketball player throughout high school and college, he was a three-season athlete at Belmont High School, where he was a member of the class of 1949, and was the starting point guard for the basketball team of his alma mater, MIT, from which he graduated with a B.S. in management in 1953. After two years in the US Army Chemical Corps, he began his professional life in Newport, RI, where he was a founding member of the Newport Ski Club in 1955. His career in engineering management included years of service at Raytheon, Avco, Magnetic Corporation of America, and MITRE Corporation.
A passionate golfer, he was a member at several country clubs: Indian Ridge (Andover, MA), Sky Meadow (Nashua, NH), Moss Creek (Hilton Head, SC), Black Diamond Ranch (Lecanto, FL), and counted among his proudest golfing moments a double eagle on the par five, 460-yard tenth hole at Indian Ridge during a member/guest tournament.
A self-taught painter and expert on picking and cooking wild mushrooms, he was also known for his annual Christmas card and poem.
The central story of his life, however, began in 1957, when he met Betty LaFlame, an elementary school teacher in Newton, MA. In the eventful year of 1959, they married, became parents, and moved to Andover, MA, where they were founding congregants of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish. Their deep and resolute belief and their devotion to each other and their union formed the foundation of their lives, a foundation on which they built a life of love, love that was showered on their children, love that was so clear to their many dear friends, love that they shared so willingly with thousands of couples through their years of involvement in Marriage Encounter and Engaged Encounter.
In recent years they have been active members of the Centering Prayer Group and the Charasmatic Community at Our Lady of Grace.
