Nag move mo sa Florida after 17 years sa New Jersey? Nag move ko sa New York area sa 1997 gikan sa West Coast area [LA-Seattle]. Dia ko nag tarbaho sa companya sa Manhattan. Idol baya to naku si Sir Edlin. Gidala-dala baya naku kadtong $1 nga iyahang gihatag sa akoa pag-abot niya sa iyahang business trip sa una. Pag-ari naku sa New York City, naga adtu ako sa building sa Cibitank kay akong damgo nga maka graduar sa law school ug maka entra sa Investment group sa Citi. Mga Americano pangutana permi, "why Citibank". Ako'ng tubag, "that's Sir Edlin's company. He's my mentor". 

Naningkamot baya gyod ko nga maka graduar sa college. Dia pa ako karon, naningkamot pa gihaphon nga maka lampos ug makuha naku ang akong MBA/JD bisan tigulang na. At least duna koy BS sa Finance ug naka membro ako sa SEC [inspired by Sir Edlin] pero naka resign na ako sa akong membership SA 2011kay "back-office" na ang akong function karon--same company, diffrent work. 

Ah, si Sir Edlin ba, wala gyod maka hulat nga maka graduar isa ako sa law school. 
Gusto naku mo visit sa inyoha [then] aron ingnon naku si Sir nga daghan kaayong salamat kay sa iyaha aku na inspire nga maga major sa finance. Bisan na discover naku nga dili lalim ang mahimong Investment Banker kapag female ka ug dili pang Miss Universe---bisan bright ka--ha.ha.

Ah, si Sir Edlin, wala gyod maka hulat. Ako gyod nga panganduy nga dalhon naku ang akong MBA/JD ug ang akong Bar exam result kapag moduaw ko sa inyo ug ingnon naku si Sir, "Sir, proud ka sa akoa kay bright ug hard worker ako nga sologoon nimo".  Dugay na unta kong nahuman, Mam, pero naga support ako sa familia sa Pinas ug balayranan sa medical sa akong Papa [he is 80]. 

Sayang Mam, perti nakung pangita sa inyong address. Gipangita pod gani naku ang address nilang Kuya Robin ug Ate Lenny.  Wow, sa New Jersey lang mo naga poyo sa una? Wow, while I commute every day to work in Manhattan and looking for you in Pinas, and while I used to look at the Citibank building and Jersey City from my office while wondering where you were, you and Sir Edlin were actually just across the  
North River.  Wow! I've been working in Manhattan for the last 12 years,  I could have served you and Sir Edlin, like the old days. 

Di na bali, Mam. Kapag mag kita mi ni Sir Edlin sa resurrection, didto nalang naku ipakita ang akong na accomplish sa kinabuhi after I left Pinas, and hopefully he will be proud of what I become.

In remembering Edlin, and his sad and untimely passing, I recall the words of the late Edward Kennedy as he delivered the eulogy for his brother Robert who was assassinated in 1968. “My brother need not be idealized, or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life,” he said. “ (but) to be remembered simply as a good and decent man”.  And it is in this spirit that I remember Edlin.

Many of us who knew Edlin remember him as a a multi-faceted individual. To say that Edlin was a character is quite an understatement. He was a bright man who sometimes masked his intelligence and true character by seemingly looking at life, and articulating his view of it,  with an easy joke, a wry comment, some cynicism and once in a while, a painful rib. “And aye, there's the rub…” because sometimes he offended some people with his ribbing. Some of his friends felt genuinely hurt. On the other hand, in my opinion, some of Edlin's criticism and ribbing helped many of us stay grounded and not get too impressed with ourselves nor our “accomplishments”. In a sense this enabled us to relate with him and each other as mere travelers on a long journey thru life all in the same boat, so to speak. And I found value in this, and again, on this I speak only for myself.
 
Those who knew him best like Vic Cui, Maning Satorre and Robin King have an even  fuller perspective. They were close enough and together with him and his family often enough that they saw his many good and sterling qualities. He had a fierce love of family and exuberantly proud of his wife and children. He was loyal. He cared for his friends. I also know him to be made of much sterner stuff.
 
We have had Edlin on our minds for the past two weeks as he struggled thru the cancer that finally took his last breath. Vic Cui and his wife Mending literally flew in from halfway around the world (Singapore) to try and help cheer Edlin up thru his difficult times; Robin and Lenny King also were packing their bags in Manila to make the trip to Crystal River for the same purpose. Maning could not travel because of health concerns yet he and wife Vicky Satorre were touch thru all the days and nights of painful vigil. Needless to say we are all devastated. No words to Vicky and his children can ever salve the wound nor ease the pain of Edlin's passing.
 
And  if a man, in life or death, were to be judged by the quality of his family and the loyalty of his close friends, then Edlin Torralba was a prince of a man indeed. “A good and decent man”. And that is the only way I know many of us will remember him.

I learned of Mr Torralba's demise from Dr. V. Torralba's office when they called to cancel my appointment for next week. I have not met Mr. Torralba but the news of his demise still came as a shock. I extend my deepest sympathies to Dr. Torralba and her family in this time of sadness and grief.

Edlin to me was very dear for many reasons. He was my student during his 4th year in USC Boys' School, one I could say had leadership quality. As high school tennis champion he was my tutor in tennis when we used to practice at the USC Main Campus quadrangle. Much later while working at Citybank branch in Cebu in 1982 he assisted me in presenting to the parents of USC Boys' school a credible financial plan to convince parents to increase the very low tuition to improve the quality  of instruction in the BHS. Then, I had the opportunity to visit him in Crystal River having been given the chance with a gift travel ticket after the Golden Jubilee anniversary of my religious  priesthood. In 2009 he was here with me to celebrate with his classmates the 50th year of their high school class graduation. In a sense I do love and miss him as a real father. Dearest Tito Edlin,

You have played a very important role in my life by guiding me through life's difficult decisions and helping me always see the 'other side' of things. 
As I look back, I am where I am today because of the support and pieces 
of advise that that you have given me all these years. I will forever cherish them
in my heart.

When i look forward on what lies ahead, it pains me to think that you will no longer be there to share your insights as i make life-altering decisions in my career and personal life. But it gives me great joy and comfort that you are now free from pain and suffering and enjoying eternal life with Our Heavenly Father.

I will miss you dearly, Tito.  I wish I could have thanked you enough for all that you have done for me...I love you very much.

I was a trainee and junior officer colleague of Edlin's at Citibank Manila in the early 1970's.  Occasionally we would play tennis at lunchtime (or did we sneak out early from work late in the afternoon - I don't remember).  Edlin was a much better tennis player, but he aways let me win a few games; and he would compliment me on my occasional good shots.

Vicky and family am so sorry for your loss! I also just recently lost my husband (James) on Oct. 6th, 2011. Nothing prepares us for this inevitable event! I know the heart will feel heavy for a awhile but time is a great healer! Always remember the fond and happy memories you had with Edlin before he passed away! My thougths and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Vicky, we were very close friends in High School at USC GHS. I still remember that time in our life! I pray for Edlin's eternal repose, may his soul rest in peace!

We are extremely heartbroken at the passing of our dearest Uncle Edlin! He was a second father to us! I will always cherish those memories of him  bringing us to the country club with all of you to learn tennis, didn't want the windows open/airconditioner on on our way home since our backs were all sweaty; days we would be so rowdy in your playroom in Marcelo; being your adopted family member when I was in FL for grad studies; the boxes of fruits we always received during the Christmas season; his crazy jokes and constant teasing and playful ways! You were a man with only good intentions, love and generosity all around! Our hearts ache losing you but we are thankful that God gave you to us to touch our lives in many ways! Go and make the heavens a funnier place!!! Your wit and joyful presence, I'm sure, is definitely a welcomed addition! 
We love you always!

This is very sad news to hear.  My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Torralba Family in this time of loss and pain.

It was painful seeing Tito Edlin during his last few hours with us but was beautiful to witness the unending stream of families and friends whose lives, unknowingly to Tito Edlin, he touched in so many ways.  Tito Edlin was like a father to us, more so after Dadddy Nick passed away 14 years ago.  Like his own flock, he guided us thru difficult times and took pride in our accomplishments.  We are so blessed to have him in our lives, sorrowful that he had to leave us so unexpectedly but comforted to know that he is reunited with our Maker, his Father Lolo Ramon, and our Daddy Nick.  He is up there smiling upon all of us and continue doing what he does best....guiding us.

A friend texted me early in the morning that indeed Edlin had passed away.  I of course knew it was inevitable, but I still somehow didn't believe it would happen that quickly.  I am only consoled by the thought that I was able to visit him before God in His love for Edlin, decided to take him back.  Last Saturday it was obvious that Edlin was very happy that [Boy Cui was] there -- a true testament to the friendship [he] shared with [Edlin].  Thank you for sharing the 1970 letter from Edlin []... it was bittersweet for me to see that familiar handwriting of his once again!  Edlin took me under his wing when I was starting out a new assignment as a junior loan officer at Citibank-- it was that assignment that made my future career a successful one, so I owe a lot to Edlin.  Whenever I made a loan proposal for his review that needed improvements, he would write me a note with his observations and suggestions -- the notes of course were in his handwriting, the same familiar script that I saw once more in his letter to [Boy].  Beyond our close work relationship, Edlin grew to treat me like a younger brother, and he was genuinely concerned about my personal problems and well being.

Our thoughts are with the entire Torralba family during this very difficult time.  We will miss his wittiness, feisty personality, and endearing presence.

My fondest memories of your Dad:

As college students at the University of San Carlos (USC) in the Philippines, we dabbled in student politics. Your Dad ran as Student Council president under the LEC (Liberal Students Confederation) with me and several  others as campaign managers. Among them were  Victoriano (Boy)   Cui, Robin King, Lenny Hill (now Mrs. Robin King),  Robert Carvajal and now Mrs. Ellen  Carvajal, Leandro Quintana, Myrna Lim (who later became Mrs. Quintana), Resil Mojares, Sally Go (now Mrs. Mojares), Frankie Legaspi, Frankin Seno, Eddie Yap, Teresita (Eng Eng) Fabian, Paco Robles, AKANs (Alpha Kappa fraternity) and so many other friends. Although Edlin lost but the memories of those days were priceless. 

We will forever miss you Shewas. We grieve your passing but you will always be in our hearts.

Dearest Tita Vicky, Almond, Czacza, Ivy, and Bem: 
Our hearts have been broken from the loss of a wonderful man who I've known since 
I was a little child. I have always been grateful to your parents for everything they do to my parents and for being the best friends my parents could ever have. Tito Ed will always remain in our hearts and fond memories of him will never be forgotten.  He is now in God's kingdom and a much better place with no pain and sufferring. Our prayers will be with you always.

Brod Edlin was one of our college fraternity brothers (known as AKAns) in the United States who graceously communicated with me thru e-mails which I published in our newsletter, The Diamond Pen, so that the rest of his fraternity brothers would also be able to read them.  We missed seeing him in our last two reunions, on Jan. 16, 2009 and Jan. 12, 2012.  Now that he is gone, we won't be able to communicate or see him again.  But his name will forever be in our Roster of Members for us to remember him.

I know that his passing will again shape you - and in time we will find all of you passionately living each day fully.  But for now, I know the loss is a heavy one.  So I pray that love will sustain you, that God's grace will fill you with peace, and hope will light your path.  Love you all.

We are deeply sorry and pained to know about the passing of Edlin. It seems like he had more to give and share but God had other plans.  We just regret that the many times we came down to Florida, never got the chance to visit Crystal River even after a lot of prodding from Edlin to do so. But even so, Edlin and Vicky came to meet with us a few years ago while vacationing. We will cherish those memories.
We'll miss you Don Edlin.....may God grant you eternal life in heaven.

I am saddened by the thought that I will never hear your voice and your laughter, nor will I ever see you smile...

Tito, you will always be in our hearts. Your life has served as an example to us- you were a man of integrity and strength, kindness and generosity. When we lose someone we love, it seems that time stands still. Dear Torralba family, even though I have not seen Edlin for17-18 years, I remember him fondly for his sense of humor and decency.  As a young Management Trainee, i looked up to Edlin and years after the chance meeting in New York was wonderful. My prayers for the repose of his soul.

I was truly shocked to learn of Edlin's passing.  The Citi Cebu family was especially close knit and will greatly mourn the loss of one of its own.  My deepest and sincerest sympathies to Vicki and the family. I will be keeping Edlin and all of you in my thoughts and prayers during this sad time.
