February 5, 1930 – December 13, 2021
A long life well lived came to an end when Ed passed away on December 13, 2021.
Born in Quincy, Massachusetts, he was the youngest of five brothers born to John and Dora
Smith. Ed was relocated to Yonkers, New York, as a young child during the Great Depression
where he was raised by his beloved grandparents, “Buster” and “Grandma” Cummings.
After graduating from Gorton High School in Yonkers, Ed served in the United States Army
during the Korean War. On returning to Yonkers from service, he met and later married
Micheline Milano. After starting a family in Yonkers, they all moved back to his roots in Quincy,
where he had accepted a job offer. A few years later the family moved again, this time to
Brockton, Massachusetts, where Ed would reside until his retirement.
Ed built a career as a pressman working for several companies in the offset printing industry.
However, he always dreamed of owning a business of his own. At the age of 55, when most
people are thinking about retiring, he fulfilled that dream by opening his own print shop, “Ideal
Print” in Raynham, Massachusetts, where he worked until his retirement.
Ed was a member of numerous fraternal organizations and was a past Vice Commander of
American Legion Post 35 in Brockton, Massachusetts.
As a young man he was an outstanding athlete who accumulated many victories in all of the
sports in which he competed: indoor track, distance running, speed skating and downhill skiing.
He also enjoyed ten pin bowling, billiards, and golf, and competed in those sports from the time
he was in high school until he was past 90 years old. He was especially proud of the success he
had running in Madison Square Garden in New York City, and skiing in the French and German
Alps. In addition to his own athletic success, Ed was an avid sports fan and enjoyed rooting for
all of the Boston sports teams.
Ed often spoke of being a very fortunate man to have had two fantastic women in his life. The
first being his wife and the mother of his children, Micheline. Several years after the 1989
passing of “Mickie” he had the good fortune of meeting Rita Lemieux. When they both retired,
Ed and Rita moved from Massachusetts to Beverly Hills, Florida, where they would remain
devoted companions until Ed passed away.
Ed will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his kind heart, his unusual but hysterically
funny sense of humor, and for always being the life of any gathering.
Predeceased by his wife Micheline, Ed is survived by his long-time companion Rita, his son
Wayne Smith and his wife Elizabeth of East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and his daughter
Cynthia Smith of Taunton, Massachusetts. He was the grandfather of Geoffrey Smith, Craig
Smith, Zakari Smith and Micheline Stallings. He was the great grandfather of Alexander Smith,
Lydia Smith and Reneé Smith. He always had a place in his heart for Geoffrey’s wife Abigail.
Services will be held in Massachusetts at a future date, followed by interment at Melrose
Cemetery in Brockton, Massachusetts.
