

Irene Pauline Songen, 92, died Sunday, September 27, 2015 at her home in Lecanto, Florida. Irene was born in Brooklyn, New York of February 24, 1923. She was the daughter of Polish immigrants, Vincent and Agnes (Biernacka) Kusielewicz. She was a member of St. Benedicts Catholic Church in Crystal River. Irene retired from the New York City Health Department where she worked as an executive secretary for the legal council. She was very active in New York politics and was a member of numerous clubs and church organizations. Irene loved to travel and was a world traveler.
She is survived by her four children: Linda Loeb (Peter) of New York, Barbara Strickland of Florida; Sandra Fox of Florida; and John E. Songen of Florida. Irene is also survived by her four grandchildren: Patrick Velsor (Dawn), Debra Nickel, James Strickland, and Alexandra Songen and four great-grandchildren: Tiffany Nickel, Heather Nickel, Matthew Velsor and Mirabelle Strickland. Irene also leaves two great-great-grandchildren: Braydon and Kaleb Pratt. Also surviving is her sister-in-law, Mary Songen, numerous nephews, nieces and friends.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband; John J. Songen in 1989.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, October 1, 2015 at 11 AM at St. Benedicts Church in Crystal River, Florida. Burial will follow at Calvery Cemetery in Queens, New York on Saturday, October 3, 2015. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations may be made to Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast.
