Mae: On my first visit to Florida as your son-in-law you won my heart through my tummy. You had heard rumors that your daughter was not regaling her husband with piggy's feet, one of  his favorite Hungarian-light delicacies, and  you welcomed me with not just piggy's feet but actually three styles of piggy's feet. It really sealed our bond and, of course, I ate them all, in all configurations. Yum! I'll miss you. Love, Matthew

This is one of my favorite photos - it involves all of us & reflects 3 generations: Dion is writing me a postcard from Florida, with my Mom's help.  My Dad is taking the picture.  I am now the same age my Mother was then when the photo was taken. It's difficult to understand the span of time -- through the looking glass, we seem not to change, and yet we go on... With Love

Thank you Grandma! 
Thank you taking such good care of me as I was growing up. Thank you for always putting chocolate pudding in the middle of the cupcakes when we baked them together. Thank you for teaching me how to make spinach pies, honey balls, and Italian cheesecake. Thank you for making me Halloween costumes when I was a kid and skirts when I was a teenager (even when I wanted them way too short). Thanks for mailing all my letters to Santa Claus and hiding all those Easter eggs. But especially, thank you for being so loving to me and my awesome cousin Erin even when we were getting into trouble and keeping you up all night.  Thank you for raising Richie to be the sweetest uncle in the world (and now a terrific grandpa, too).  And thanks for raising Mom to be such a truly amazing mother and inspiring woman.

My sincerest condolences to Mae's family. Although I didn't know you all very well, you were always highly regarded by my father and grandmother.  My love and prayers are with you all. God bless.

I know that Mamie always called Diane "Gypsy." That always seemed very funny and, at the same time, somehow very apt.
I can still remember one particularly delightful (impromtu) coffee and cake we had with Mae and John once on a late afternoon. We were sitting around the kitchen table at Diane's old apartment near 4th Ave. in Brooklyn. Dion was still a little girl. I guess that it must have been the late-80s. It seemed that Mae was always smiling; I can't even picture her without a pleasant, good-natured smile on her face. Sweet memories!

Thank you for cooking the best chicken soup ever, a soup that I feel can not be matched, even by the finest restaurant ...Thank you for sending me your recipe in your handwriting , I will spend my whole life trying to decipher the recipe for perfect chicken soup.      Thank  you for not killing Dion and I when we broke the door.. Thank  you for allowing me to witness  the loving endearing constant    " Johnny & Mae"    bickering that always brought a smile to my face . I will forever think that is the  definite sign of true love.  Thank you for my handmade maternity outfits that were better than anything store bought. Thank you for my shower umbrella that I still lend to friends for their showers because it is awesome! Thank you for being the only one I could call after 11 for advice and conversation and what to cook tomorrow . Thank you for telling me to call you Grandma instead of Aunt Mae .  Thank you for raising a son who so selflessly took on the role as my father. Thank you for raising a brilliant daughter who I like to brag about when I feel stupid . Thank you for giving me my cousin Dion who is the closest thing I have to sister..  Thank you.  I will always remember you with nothing but love .

There was a time when my Aunt and I were very close.  My daughter & I would go wth Aunt Mae & Uncle John shopping on Saturdays.  We would go to Canal Street to these stores where you could buy 1 screw but watch were you stepped there were holes in the floor.  Then we would go to Katz's Deli for lunch.  Unfortunately things changed and people grow apart but the good memories live in my heart.  My deepest sympathies to my cousins Ritchie, Diane, Dion & Erin.

My beloved Aunt Mae. I'm going to miss you, but you'll always live on in my heart!

    I will always remember the first time Grandma showed me how to deep-fry the Christmas honey balls. When I was little, I remember rolling out the dough with her into long fat spaghetti strings and thinking it felt just like the homemade playdough that she would make for me and my cousin Erin.  It was an accomplishment when I was allowed to use the sharp knife to cut the rolled dough into tiny pieces (and it worked much better, too!).  But still, she made me stand way back from the deep fryer.  I could see the cloud of steam rise up from the stove and hear the loud sputtering of the oil as she nudged the tiny doughballs into the pot.  Then the smell of fried dough began to fill the kitchen.  I had to watch her from the table and wait.  I didn't want to stay back because I wanted to see what she was doing.  It was still something of a mystery how our tiny playdough balls transformed into fluffy cookies.  We were in Florida and I was a teenager when she finally trusted me to fry the dough myself.  She gave me a schmatta to wear and watched me closely to make sure I was being careful.  I realized that now I could make honeyballs from start to finish, and knew it was a tradition I would carry on forever.
