Mike was born in the Florida Keys where his love of the water first started. By the age of 10 him and his brother Tom had their own boat and that boat was very seldom at the dock. Mike loved swimming, diving, fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving. Mike met the love of his life, Amy, in the Keys. Mike and Amy grew up together from a very early age and were best of friends, I think we all knew they would eventually marry and start a family of their own.
Mike comes from a family of firefighters and knew early on that firefighting would be for him. At the age of 12 he became a Fire Explorer with Monroe County and eventually became a volunteer member of Layton Volunteer Fire Department.
After leaving the keys, Mike moved to Citrus County and continued his firefighting career volunteering with DeRosa Volunteer, Marion County and then Citrus County, totaling over 24 years in the fire service. Mike had a deep respect for fire tradition and believed in the brotherhood that comes along with the fire service. Mike met many people during his career and considered himself blessed to have so many valuable friends.
Mike had a joy for life that far exceeded what most people get the chance to experience. He loved his family unconditionally and was always there in our time of need. Mike’s love of the water followed him to Citrus County where he continued to spend time with his family and friends boating, fishing and sunset cruising.
Mike is survived by his wife Amy, his two sons Michael Wayne Fletcher and Bradley Fletcher, his father Wayne Fletcher, mother Teresa Fletcher, his brother Thomas Fletcher and wife Cariie Fletcher, mother-in-law Lori Cocks, grandmother (Nana) Lois DeVita and Grandmother Ruth Brown (Grandma Brown) and a multitude of other family members.
If Mike was here today he would say, life is too short to live in grief – enjoy each day that God has given you and always help others in their time of need.
