April 9, 2021

I loved how my Aunt Cilla was so smart, purposeful, and resourceful, whether she was making a holiday meal or facing personal hardships and pain… She was a strong woman before I was old enough to understand how important it was to be a strong woman.
Rosa Parks once said, “I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear.” This makes me think of my Aunt Cilla and how one night she helped me to face my greatest fear: losing my mother.
I was doing my best to care for my dying mother, Pauline, when I called her sister, my Aunt Cilla, in the middle of the night because I was alone and frozen in fear – Mom couldn’t tell me what she needed, what she wanted… Oh, My God, what should I do? Aunt Cilla made the 1000+ miles that stood between us melt away and gave me the courage to be smart, purposeful, and resourceful. Fear gave way to action, a plan, “knowing what must be done”. She helped me to be strong, like her.
It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to my dear Aunt Cilla. She was an inspiration.
