Virgil “Leon” Libbert (July 27, 1943 - December 27, 2018) passed away peacefully at the Hospice of Crystal River after a battle with lymphoma at the young age of 75. After a long banking career in Evansville, Indiana, he and his family moved to Florida in 1985 to operate Hontoon Landing, a fishing marina in Deland, FL. In 1986, he moved to Tavares, FL where he and his family owned and operated Lake Harris Lodge until 1998. While in Tavares, Leon was an active volunteer at the little league baseball park where he coached for 10 years. After he sold the marina, Leon became a crop insurance claims adjuster where he worked until just this year. He loved the outdoors, nature, photography, shopping for and collecting antiques, and eating at McDonalds. Leon was preceded in death by his father Fred, mother Hallie, and brother Byron. He is survived by his wife Ann, son Jeff and wife Amber, son Jason and wife Shannon, daughter Janiece Lewitke and husband Eric, three granddaughters Mackenzie, Reese, and Jocelyn, three grandsons Zane, Drake, and Declan and his sister Donna Rice. A service will be held at the Fero Funeral Home at 5955 N. Lecanto Highway, Beverly Hills, FL on Friday, January 4 at 2pm. The family does not request flowers or gifts, rather a donation to the National Forest Foundation to plant trees in Leon’s memory.
