A native of Nufaru, Tulcea, Romania, he was born Oct. 10, 1941 to Illie Uzun and Natasia (Spinoe) Uzun, the oldest of six children. During his life, Vlase was both a factory worker and grocery store bagger, both occupations he loved very much. He was Romanian Orthodox by faith and as a member of a Chess Club in Romania earlier in life, loved to play chess with his two grandsons.
