Adelaide Braswell Kendrick, age 79, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 16, 2025. The daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. Nicholas Tilford Braswell, Jr. was born on September 2,1945 in Demopolis, Alabama. She is preceded in death by her husband, James Erasmus Kendrick III and her three loving brothers, Nicholas Tilford Braswell III, John Webb Braswell and George Dwight Cornish Braswell.
Adelaide is survived by her daughter, Adelaide Kendrick Vandevelde (Russell), and her son, James "Tommy" Erasmus Kendrick, IV. She was affectionately known as "Addie" by her seven grandchildren, Mary Adelaide Vandevelde, Elizabeth Preston Vandevelde, Ann Kendrick Vandevelde, Frances Braswell Vandevelde, Juliette Flowers Kendrick, Connor James Kendrick and Dylan Scott Kendrick. Addie adored them all and showed them and her granddogs unconditional love and devoted attention.
Adelaide grew up in Demopolis surrounded by a large family with many treasured cousin relationships. She attended St. Mary's Dominican College in New Orleans and The University of Alabama where she met her husband, Jim. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority and a lifelong, loud cheering Bama fan. Adelaide began her teaching career in Birmingham and later found her dearly cherished friends and community teaching at Mountain Brook Junior High School.
Adelaide loved her Catholic faith and was involved in many areas at St. Francis Xavier Church including Sacristan, Bereavement Team, Linen Committee, Meals on Wheels, Holy Rosary Food Pantry and most recently serving as President of The Highland Sewing Circle. She volunteered for many years in the UAB gift shop and was a member of the Junior League of Birmingham, The Caxton Club, Snippers Garden Club and MB Kappa Delta Alumnae Association. If she wasn't walking her granddogs, Adelaide could be found with many friends at Jazzercise.
Addie was fond of nicknames and terms of endearment. She never met a stranger and she was kind to everyone she encountered. She appreciated all the blessings in her life and always put others before herself. She was friendly, fun and had a quick wit. Addie found a genuine joy serving others and steadfastly loving her family and friends.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Miesha Merchant and Alecha Gresham for lovingly caring for Addie over the past month.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Frances Xavier Church on Thursday, March 20th at 1:00 PM, with visitation and a reception to follow in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in her memory to The Exceptional Foundation, 1616 Oxmoor Road, Birmingham, AL 35209 or a charity of your choice.
