He was the son of Dr. Louis Jesse Geldzahler and Helen Wortman Geldzahler of New York.
After his childhood in New York City, Alan attended the University of Alabama, where he met his wife, Patricia Grossman. Together, they moved to Birmingham, and Alan began his 54 year career in the printing business at Quality Press Inc.
Alan and Pat’s children were the center of their lives, and Alan ensured that his love of history, books, and education played a large role in their lives. His intellectual curiosity never waned and he continued learning up until the time of his death. Throughout his life, he enjoyed playing tennis regularly with friends, traveling with his family, and participating in a book club for over 20 years. Alan was loved by friends near and far, and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Pat Geldzahler, sons Glenn (Debbie) and Evan (Ann), grandchildren Stacy Moss (Mike), Stephanie Ladden (Matt), Claire Geldzahler, David Geldzahler, and Alex Geldzahler, and 4 great-grandchildren, Hayes and Emory Moss, and Mason and Parker Ladden.
