Dr. Allan Robert Goldstein

August 8, 1939 – September 13, 2026

Dr. Allan Robert Goldstein, M.D of Birmingham, AL, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend and pulmonologist, passed away on September 13, 2026, at the age of 87.

Allan was a devoted physician whose career in pulmonary and internal medicine spanned decades and touched countless lives throughout Birmingham and the Southeast.

Allan grew up in Cleveland, Ohio where he developed the grit, determination, and work ethic that would stay with him throughout his life. He received his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1965. He began his medical career at Mount Sinai Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, where he developed his expertise in internal medicine and pulmonary medicine and ultimately served as Chief of the Pulmonary Department In 1976, he established his own private practice and continued caring for patients for many years.

His commitment to medicine extended well beyond his clinical practice. Dr. Goldstein was a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Thoracic Society, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, the Jefferson County Medical Society, the Alabama Thoracic Society, and the American College of Chest Physicians. In addition, he served as President of the Alabama Medical Society. He also served as a delegate to the American Medical Association and was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society.

His journey as a physician also took him to Vietnam, where he served as a doctor in the United States Navy and received Vietnam Campaign Ribbons. His dedication to service was reflected both in his military career and in his lifelong commitment to his patients and the medical profession.

Dr. Goldstein often spoke of his deep love for medicine and credited his childhood family physician, Dr. Paul Siegel, with inspiring him to become a doctor. That inspiration grew into a lifetime of service characterized by compassion, professionalism, and dedication to the care of others.

Away from medicine, Dr. Goldstein cherished his family and the interests that brought him joy. He and his wife, Sherron, raised three daughters and were blessed with five grandchildren. He was an avid baseball fan, and faith was an important part of his life -Temple Emanu-El was truly part of his larger family and a place of comfort and community. Allan brought humor, energy, and personality to everything he did.

But for all of Allan's professional accomplishments and adventures, his greatest pride was his family. Allan adored his grandchildren and took great pride in watching them grow. He was the kind of grandfather who was always interested in what they were doing, ready with advice when asked and happiest when the family was together.

Allan leaves behind his beloved wife, Sherron; his daughters Stefanie (partner Brian) and Melissa (husband Michael), son-in-law Mitchel and his five grandchildren, Evan, Harrison (Anna), Carter, Olivia and Ryan. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Jennifer.

Allan will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever part of the many lives he touched.

He will be remembered not only for his accomplishments as a physician and his service to his country, but also as a husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mentor. His legacy lives on in the patients he cared for, the colleagues he worked alongside, and, most importantly, the family he loved dearly.
