Alverene Curry Prather

Alverene Robbie Curry Prather, 95, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 19, 2021 and be reunited with loved ones who preceded her in death. Those include her husband of 56 years Howard Prather, daughter Debra Sue Prather Humphrey, grandchildren Brandon and Tiffany Humphrey, her parents Mosley Olis and Ora Pearl Lynn Curry, sisters Vera Curry Walker and Barbara Curry Spradling, and brothers Orval Mosley Curry, Louey Calvin Curry and Jerry Lynn Curry. She died peacefully at her home with her loved ones around her.

Alverene is survived by her devoted son Douglas Howard Prather, loving daughter-in-law Moonyen Prather, beloved grandson Jared Prather, and other family members and a host of friends who will always remember her with much love and affection. Her church family at Raleigh Avenue Baptist Church was very special to her. She often called many of them, always asking if she could pray for them.

Alverene was born July 12, 1926 in what is today Homewood, Alabama where she lived for most of her life. She, her husband, and children resided in Cedartown, Georgia for several years before returning to Homewood.

She was a woman of quick wit who loved her family and friends dearly. She loved family gatherings, especially with her brothers and sisters who were a fun-loving group that shared a close bond with each other. After her husband’s death, Alverene lived with Doug and Moonyen where she was greatly blessed by their love and devotion. She dearly loved Moonyen, who cared for her like her own mother, and watching her grandson Jared grow from an adorable little boy into a kind, successful college student was one of her greatest joys in life.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 23 at Elmwood Chapel in Birmingham. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery to immediately follow the service. The Reverend Skip Parvin will conduct the funeral services.
