Arthur John Sharbel, Jr, died peacefully on November 14, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on June 29, 1924, to Josephine Wehby and Arthur Sharbel, Sr. As a member of the Greatest Generation, he served our country during WWII and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Our country awarded him the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He attended the University of Alabama and Washington State University and was graduated from Birmingham-Southern College. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ginger McVea Sharbel, daughter, Audrey Sharbel Jost (John), son, Arthur John (Buddy) Sharbel, III (Leslie), and daughter, Cameron Sharbel McKinley (Jay). Grandchildren are Jonathan Jost (Andi), Jeremy Jost (Haley), Lydia Jost Barnett (Tyler), Ginny Jost Dooley (Eric), Margaret Sharbel, John Sharbel, Charlie Sharbel, Joseph McKinley, E. J. McKinley, Mary Virginia McKinley, and great-grandchildren Maggie Mac and McLean Jost. Loving surviving brother is Paul Sharbel (Marianne) and brother-in-law, Coleman Geary, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Omra Sharbel Joseph and Dolores Sharbel Geary. He will be remembered as a loving husband, an exceptional father and grandfather, and a loyal friend. He brought joy to so many through his wonderful sense of humor, his infectious smile, and his optimistic outlook. Visitation is Sunday, November 16, at 5:30 p.m., in St. Elias Maronite Catholic Church located at 836 8th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35205, followed by the rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass is at 11:00 a.m. in St. Elias on Monday, November 17, 2014. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts in Art’s name be made to Birmingham-Southern College.
