Aubrey Thomas Baugh, Jr., M.D., age 83 of Hoover, AL, passed away on May 7, 2015. He was born May 11, 1931 in Birmingham, AL to the late Aubrey Thomas Baugh Sr., and Eva Hancock Baugh. He was preceded in death by his wife, Zelia M. Baugh. Aubrey was a devoted husband, loving father, doting grandfather and a committed physician. His role as a caregiver for his family and patients defined him. Aubrey had the gift of putting patients and acquaintances alike instantly at ease. His kind, gentle spirit and that insuppressible sense of humor that was with him until the end was evident to all of those who knew and loved him. In his leisure time, Aubrey loved to spend time on Lake Martin. He instilled an appreciation for the water by sharing many hours with his family swimming, skiing, and sailing. Aubrey was an enthusiastic fan of Alabama football as well. Recent family pilgrimages to the Tide's National Championship games will forever hold precious and entertaining memories for his family. As a longtime member of Bluff Park United Methodist Church, Aubrey exemplified a true servant’s heart. He served on several committees and went on several medical mission trips all over the world. He led his family by example, leaving a legacy of strong faith and love of Christ. Aubrey was a graduate of Hueytown High School, where he was elected to the National Honor Society and was President of the SGA. After high school, Aubrey attended the University of Alabama for two years until he joined the Navy. Aubrey served 4 years with the United States Navy during the Korean War (1951-1955). While serving in the Navy, Aubrey became a Navy Medical Corpsman and this served as his introduction and desire to becoming a Medical Doctor. When he completed his tour of duty with the Navy in 1955, Aubrey enrolled into Birmingham-Southern College (BSC) (1955-1957) where he completed all of his pre- medical coursework. Aubrey was very active while at BSC and was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. After completing his required coursework at BSC, Aubrey attended the University Of Alabama School of Medicine (1957-1961). After graduating from University of Alabama Medical College, he completed 4 more years of post- graduate training. Aubrey served as a Rotating Intern with Cincinnati General (1961-1962). He also served one year as a Resident with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital (1962-1963), and then he served a second year as a Pediatric Resident with Charity Hospital of New Orleans-Tulane Division. Aubrey completed his post graduate training by being a Fellow in Pediatric Allergy with Baylor University College of Medicine. He served as a Preceptor in Allergy with the McGovern Allergy Clinic for two years (1965-1967). Upon completing his post graduate studies, Aubrey packed up his young family and headed east from Houston, TX to Homewood, AL ,where he opened up the Alabama Allergy and Asthma Center in Homewood, AL in 1966. Over the course of the next 30 years, Aubrey saw, cured, and befriended several hundred patients and their families. The practice he started continues to this day. Aubrey was licensed to practice medicine in Louisiana, Texas, and Alabama. Aubrey was a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics and Fellow of: the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Allergy, the American Association for Clinical Immunology and Allergy, the American Academy of Allergy, and the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. Aubrey was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Allergy and Immunology, American College of Allergy and Immunology, and the Alabama Society of Allergy and Immunology, where he was President from 1988-1989. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Medical Association State of Alabama, Jefferson County Medical Society, and Jefferson County Pediatric Society, and the Southeastern Allergy Association. Aubrey was President of the University Of Alabama School Of Medicine Alumni Association (1973-1974), President of the Hoover Athletic Association from (1978-1980), the Caduceus Club President (1986-1988), and Who’s Who in Alabama. He is survived by his daughter, Zelia Garth Baugh, Heather Autumn Youngkin of Hoover, AL; son, Aubrey Thomas Baugh, III and his wife Margaret of Batesville, AL; grandchildren, Thomas Hayden Baugh, James Hunter Baugh, Elizabeth Anne Baugh; nieces, Holly Cimino (Victor), Kimberly Baugh, Donna Baugh; nephews, Iverson Warner Doles IV, John Riley Maynard, III (Beth), Ephraim Garth Maynard, Danny Baugh ; sister-in-laws, Jimmie Maynard, Elizabeth Doles, Sondra Baugh, and his beloved dog Woody. The family would like to give special thanks to these angels on earth who did a wonderful job with his care: Judy Batson and Tomiko White (Healing Touch Caregivers), and all of the staff at Affinity Hospice. The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday, May 12, between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. at Bluff Park United Methodist Church. The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. at Bluff Park United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations are made to Bluff Park United Methodist Church, UAB Division of Memory Disorders and Behavioral Neurology, Baptist Health Foundation, and Affinity Hospice.
