Benjamin Couch McDonald died at his home in Vestavia, Alabama on Friday, February 12, 2015 at the age of 88. He grew up in Birmingham and went to Woodlawn High School and Massey Business College. After serving in the Marine Corps during World War II, he married his high school sweetheart, Jeanette Aders. They would have been married 69 years on August 30, 2015. He loved sports and spent many hours at Wahouma Park, watching his sons play baseball and serving as the commissioner of the league. He worked in the sporting goods industry, first at Hibbett's Sporting Goods and later at Vulcan Athletics. He enjoyed calling on high school and college coaches, and through the years became good friends with many of them. Known as Benny to his family and friends, he always had a twinkle in his eye and loved to make people laugh with his quick wit. He never met a stranger because he was always interested in people and loved to talk. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette (Aders) McDonald; his daughter, Karen Day (Harrell), and sons Kerry McDonald (Tracey) and Jerry McDonald (Carol); his grandchildren, Lori Day Dorminey (Johnny), Dr. Tricia Day Gibbs (Chad), Kristin McDonald Berney (J.T.), Kallie McDonald, Julie McDonald, and Will McDonald; and great-grandchildren, Ava Dorminey, Jake Dorminey, and Linus Gibbs.There will be a celebration of his life on Monday, February 16, 2015 with visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 AM with service beginning at 11:00 AM at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel.
