Betty Kilpatrick Sherer of Hoover, Alabama went home to be with her Lord on June 27, 2019. She came to know Jesus Christ as her Savior at the age of thirteen. She knew that salvation could only come from Jesus’ saving work on the cross. His resurrection and her faith in Him brought her joy that could only come from her Redeemer. Her children remember her singing gospel songs around the home as they grew up. She loved the Lord and sought to live her life for His glory.
The family will receive friends at 12:30 p.m. with Betty’s service beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at Johns-Ridout's Mortuary-Elmwood Chapel 800 Dennison Ave SW, Birmingham, AL 35211 with Tyler, Thomas and Michael Sherer officiating. A graveside service for the family will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. Pall bearers will be: Tom, Michael, Thomas, Tyler, Dave Cunningham and Tom Hammett, Sr.
Betty, the only daughter of the late Vernon Hugh Kilpatrick and Margaret Runion Kilpatrick was born December 2, 1932 in Marshall, North Carolina. After graduating from Oakley High School in
Asheville, Betty attended and graduated from Memorial Mission Hospital School of Nursing. Shortly after finishing Nursing School she met her late husband, Thomas Howard Sherer, there in Asheville. After they married they moved to Homewood, Alabama and began their family.
Betty is survived by her children; Thomas “Tom” Hewitt Sherer II, Margaret Jean “Cissy” Sherer, Michael Hugh Sherer (Cathie) and step daughter Lynn Sherer Cunningham (Dave); her grandchildren; Shannon Marie Mercer, Jennifer Lauren Gunther, Thomas Howard Sherer II (Rachel), Tyler Patrick Sherer and Amanda Caroline Sherer; her great grandchildren; Ashlyn Reynolds, Alayna Reynolds, Brayden Mercer, Carolyn Sherer and great great grandchild; Kingston Haynes. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Howard Sherer, of 28 years.
Betty enjoyed her time of worship with friends at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church and was a member for most of the time she lived in the greater Birmingham area. She found the people to be warm and receptive and appreciated their friendship to her and her family.
Betty was best remembered as a mother, a nurse and an avid Auburn fan. As a mother she purposed to love and instill character within her children. Her most memorable attribute would be that of perseverance. She loved her children and devoted her time and energy towards seeing that they had the best opportunities to succeed. She approached her nursing career with similar fervor; the patient always came first. Her quality of care was unsurpassed and greatly appreciated by not only the patient, but the physician as well. Upon moving to the Birmingham area soon after her marriage, her husband Tom, a chemical engineering graduate from Auburn University, introduced her to Auburn Athletics. It did not take her long to buy into the Blue and Orange and become an avid fan. Those that knew Betty, quickly became aware of her enthusiasm for Auburn during the Fall Football Seasons. She was always quick to support and defend her beloved team. The family would like to express their gratitude for the outstanding and compassionate care she received at South Haven for the last 3 years. We are also thankful to Affinity Hospice for the care given to her over these last several months.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Betty Sherer to be made to Dawson Memorial Church or South Haven Health and Rehabilitation.
