Betty Jean Stanford Wallace, 88, of Summerville, South Carolina, wife of the late James Harold Wallace, entered into eternal rest Sunday, July 6, 2025. Betty was born November 17, 1936 in the Pine Springs Community of Lamar County, Alabama, daughter of the late Thomas Stanford and Flora Lewis Stanford. They moved to Birmingham when she was five years old, and she was educated in the public schools, graduating from Ensley High School in 1954. In 1970, the family moved with Jim’s job to Ft Lauderdale, Florida. Their next move was to Colombia in 1979. To be next to Janet and her family, they moved to Charleston, SC in 2004. A member of John Wesley United Methodist Church, she was previously a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church in Columbia, SC, Christ Church United Methodist in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Fairview United Methodist Church in Birmingham, AL where she met her husband, and they were married for 62 years. She was an avid reader and gardener, and a doting grandmother.
She is survived by her daughter, Janet Wallace Deavor (James) of Charleston, SC; grandson, Luke Deavor; granddaughter, Grace Bennett (Cooper); and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, James Harold Wallace, she was preceded in death by grandchildren, Thomas Wallace Deavor and Tallulah Denise Deavor.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Village at Summerville's Legacy of Caring Fund (201 W 9th North St., Summerville, SC 29483), which supports those in need of a higher level of care at the village who cannot afford it. This tribute is in honor of Betty's six-plus years in the Palmetto Unit. The family extends their deep gratitude to the dedicated nurses, CNAs, staff, chaplains, and administration at the Village at Summerville, who cared for Betty with compassion, respect, and love.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Elmwood Chapel Funeral Home from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the Celebration Chapel. A Celebration of Betty's life will follow at 11:00 AM. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, at Elmwood Cemetery.
