Blanche Horton Quick, 95, of Memphis, passed away at home on October 29, 2023. Born on November 4, 1927 in Birmingham, Alabama, she was the oldest child and only daughter of Cooper M. and Alma Horton, both of Birmingham.
She attended Howard College (now Samford University) and later graduated from Memphis State University. In her young adult life, she was a supervisor at Bell Telephone Co. in Birmingham. She later was a second-grade teacher at Hawkins Mill Elementary in Memphis for many years. For over 50 years, she was an active member of Second Baptist Church in Memphis, where she taught three-year-old Sunday School, and of the Princeton Park Garden Club. She was a long-time volunteer for MIFA, delivering meals to the elderly. She enjoyed dancing with her husband and travelling extensively on cruises after her retirement, and she baked an incomparable plum cake.
She delighted in her daughter and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Alton D. Quick, and her brothers James F. Horton and Cooper M. Horton. Jr.
She leaves behind her daughter Christie (Chris Aberle) of Mandeville, LA, and grandchildren Brennan, Marshall, and Connor, as well as twin great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank caregivers Brenda Carpenter, Michelle Buckalew, Elizabeth Bradford, Mattie Stewart, Holly Grooms, Lynn Rowell, and Erma Rayborn, dedicated ladies who gave so completely of themselves and became friends and family over time. They are owed a deep debt of gratitude. Additionally, the Methodist Hospice team provided caring comfort and service during the final days.
Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Metropolitan Inter-faith Association of Memphis (MIFA) or the Alzheimer’s Association.
