Bonnie Vines Powell, of Vestavia Hills, was called home to her Lord and Savior on December 17, 2017 after a difficult battle with cancer. To know Bonnie was to love Bonnie and this was because her joy for life was so infectious. Bonnie’s smile could light up a room, and her love for others lit up the lives of all who knew her. Bonnie graduated from Banks High School, where she was a proud member of the acapella choir. She graduated from Samford University and received her Masters of Education from UAB. Bonnie had a servant heart and she rarely complained about anything. Bonnie devoted much of her career to teaching courses to UAB employees where her enthusiasm was always appreciated. Bonnie and her husband, Bill, traveled to many countries on mission trips where she spread the love of Christ to all of those she met. Bonnie loved being a grandmother and her grandchildren are going to miss their “Neeno” so very much. Bonnie’s love for Jesus, and her gift of encouragement, will be treasured forever and her legacy is sure to live on through all of those that were honored to know her. Bonnie is preceded in death by her parents, Walton and Joyce Vines. Bonnie is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 48 years, Dr. William David Powell III; her children, David Marshall Powell (Allison), Jeffrey Scott Powell (Anna), Bethany Powell Smith (Cullen); her grandchildren: Marshall Graham Powell, Mary Claire Powell, Mary Katherine Shuta, Avery Noelle Powell, Andrew Scott Powell, William Cullen Smith and Olivia Trice Smith; her sisters: Carol Vines Etheridge and Electa Vines Boyington. The family will be having a private graveside service on Thursday morning at Elmwood Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 21st at Shades Mountain Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. with a celebration of life service to follow at 12:00 p.m. The Encouragement Team at Shades Mountain Baptist Church was very special to Bonnie, as there was nothing she enjoyed more than doing for others. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to “The Encouragement Team” at Shades Mountain Baptist Church, 2017 Columbiana Road, Birmingham AL 35216.
