Brecton R. Whitten, lovingly known as “Brec,” passed away on November 15, 2025, in Birmingham, Alabama, at the age of 64. Born on November 13, 1961, in Birmingham, Brec lived a life marked by devotion to family, faith, and friendship.
He was the beloved husband of Nora (Coggins) Whitten, with whom he shared a beautiful life in Smoke Rise, Alabama. Brec was the cherished son of Waymond and Joyce (Waldrop) Whitten of Hoover, Alabama, and a proud brother to Sherrie Hunt Castleberry (Bruce) and April Allen (Randy), both of Hoover.
A graduate of Alliance Christian School, Brec dedicated his professional life to Data Processing at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, where his work ethic and integrity earned the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
Brec was raised as a Southern Baptist, and his love for bowling was legendary. He achieved seven perfect games (300), four 800 series, and reached an impressive average of 230, accomplishments that reflected his passion and perseverance.
He will be deeply missed by his extended family, including his father-in-law Artis D. Coggins, siblings-in-law Daniel Coggins, Glen Coggins, and Deana Pesnell, and numerous nieces and nephews: Stephen Hunt, Olivia Allen, James Allen, Jimmy Pesnell, Anna Pesnell, Jacob Coggins, and the late Zachary Coggins, US Marine. He was also preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Rebecca Coggins.
Brec’s life was a testament to kindness, loyalty, and love. His laughter, his unwavering faith, and his competitive spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A visitation will be held at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 1:00 – 2:00 pm with a funeral service beginning at 2:00 pm. He will be laid to rest at Elmwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Joshua Station, 2330 West Mulberry Place, Denver, CO 80204, in memory of Brec Whitten.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the ER team and the Neuro Stroke & Surgery Unit at UAB Hospital for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Brec, and for the kindness and support extended to his loved ones during this difficult time.
